If there is an accident and someone is using a phone it's the phone users fault. If no one has a phone then that's to be decided.

There was a load of campaining a while back and the gov. went on and on about this very thing ... adverts about phones and driving you would think people would just wait till they reach thier destination or pull up ... how fricking hard is it?

I think that women was ignorant.

Great news! I'm sure the "I can drive and text" type comments from her will be the cause of a longer rather than shorter prison sentence.

I seriously think this motorist believed she could feign ignorance and have it work in her favour, poor love:rolleyes:.

Must say I'm very surprised if her legal rep thought this would do her any good.

"I would like to take this opportunity to beg people to never answer their phone when driving."

"a horrid case"

If only that could be the end of the matter.

Never mind the deserved prison sentance, she should be banned from driving for life.

+1 on that.

What I reckon will happen, from seeing othertrails in the news, is she'll get 2 years in prison. She'll behave, go to low security or open and get time off for good behaviour. These cases do a lot to put people off (hopefully) using their mobiles, its time this sort of thing gets the same hatred as drink driving.

Absolutely.

I am a firm and vocal believer in the idea that driving should be a privilege and not a right. She was a stupid cow and because of that someone died. What possible reason could there be that she should be allowed back behind the wheel of a car?

I believe the mother of the deceased has started an Online Downing St Petition but the BBC don't seem to have a link

I have actually seen people text without looking at their phone so I know that is possible although it is still a distraction if done while trying to drive a car. But how on earth can she say in all seriousness that she can receive messages (by which she must mean read messages) without looking at her phone??

Somewhat academic as her whole attitude is appalling if she thinks it's acceptable in any circumstances (least of all travelling at 70mph) to be able to use your phone while driving.

Sadly, as Cheadle Hulme says, not an uncommon attitude.

you can set your tom tom sat nav up to read them out verbaly for you

unfortunately the bbc's news site does not appear to be working for me at the moment,

in terms of texting while not looking at the phone, it is a skill i have learnt to allow me to text with my phone under the desk in lectures, i have even managed it while doing a presentation (a group member was absent and we were trying to track her down and let her know what room to come to) i'll admit that i had to feign thinking about something in order to complete the text.

obviously i can't read a text without looking at the phone.

I have pre- written a text and left it on my phones screen so that i only need to press one button to send it, needing only to find the phone (in the cup holder) and press the largest button on it, easily and safely done at traffic lights - however the ban on touching a mobile phone while driving has since come into play,

so i pull off into motorway services for a moment in order to do this

Seriously, what's so important that it can't wait until you're stopped?

I felt my phone vibrating about 10 seconds after I started cycling to work this morning, but I ignored it until I got to the level crossing (barriers lowering as I approached, so I knew I'd have 5 minutes). The world, amazingly enough, didn't end.
