I had a boss once where, if any work was not going quite to plan, it was 'X has been looking at...'
If it had gone well, it was 'We have done...' or 'My team has done...'
... nobber.

Personally I think it is down to the circumstances at the time

If you are working in a situation which is hierarchical such as a meeting, or dealing with acomplaint etc then it may be appropriate to state who is the boss

However if you are performing a task that is at the same level then it isn't important

"I don't stock Caberg", "I've not got much space so we don't hold a lot out the back". I thought for a minute he owned the store, but he didn't.

At work, I'm always interested in how people talk about their teams. I get that managers have PAs, so "my PA" passes me by. "My team" also, as it can suggest belonging as well as ownership.

I've met some managers for whom "my staff" "my engineers/carers/shop assistants" is a mechanism for ego massage. I can't help but feel uncomfortable with those in between, with those who mean nothing more than their colleagues.

I'll shut up now.[/QUOTE]
I get very annoyed with these tiny little ego wins, they are seen to be as innocuous as a drop of water but over time they create a tide that washes one person higher up the food chain.

My pet hate is the "My" reference, as you put it. From my experience those that insist on it are just feeding their lack of self esteem

I have left at least two positions mosrly because a person either more senior or more junior to me is on one of these ego trips ...i just don't want to work around people like that, it distracts my enjoyment of a demanding role and my ultimate success.

There are jobs, or positions that require true leadership and command but in the round, most don't and its the "aspiring" types who copy the words to inflate their position /ego

That's the type of crap I talking about.

Problem is, if you raise it each time...you are the one who comes across as the problem

I manage a group of staff but refer to them in conversation with others as my colleague(s) as each are as equally important to the team as I am.

People who regularly require their ego to be massaged are generally unpleasant to work with.

My ex MiL would mention my solicitor at every chance she got, she also had a hairdresser and a supermarket manager. no doubt I was her daughters husband in different company.

I have a superb "Deputy"
There are several meetings we go to involving computers

In these meetings, it is clear who is managing the project ... And it is not me!

In this case my entire role is supporting him
