My Carrera Subway 8 commuting bike is equipped with Conti Sport Contact tyres. Recently I've had a real run of bad luck, the most recent incident being this morning when I had a flat front tyre. The idea of the bombproof commuter bike becomes just a touch ironic when I'm struggling to remove a wheel fitted with a roller brake (and a hub gear at the back).

I've ordered two Schwalbe Marathon Kevlar tyres, as I've read some good reports of their ability to resist the Fairy. Does anyone know of any inner tubes that also have some kind of protection built in?

You can buy Tuftape? that goes around the inside of the tyre. I know people who cut the bead off old tyres and use the remainder to act as a tyre liner. It can be difficult to get the ensemble on the rim so beware.

Even with puncture resistant tyres you get punctures. Just less of them.

Two with Marathon (not pluses) this year both in January (but don't let the fairy know - she whispers).

it's only a puncture, we all have them!

It looks as if I didn't express myself clearly enough. By "Recently I've had a real run of bad luck" what I meant was that I have had several within quite a short period of time.

Thanks for your input anyway.

How old are the tyres?

If they are under a year old you can get them replaced under the continental guarentee. I did it with mine a few years ago. They were the ones fitted on the bike (Ridgeback Nemesis) at new and I was able to use the documentation of the sale as proof of purchace for the tyres. If needed I may have the correspondance around somewhere. Madison (importers) and the LBS (Edinburgh CoOp) were both helpful.

You certainly didn't.

It could just be bad luck, or some other installation problem. But we'd need more information on the type of puncture, shape, size, position to know. Might be pinch flat who knows with no information to go one.

You might find these useful...

i just assumed, albeit correctly, that you meant 'puncture' when you said 'P*nct*re'.

lucky guess, hey?
