I have noticed the "summer crew" disappearing one by one on my commute...anyone else noticed ?

Ive not ridden for a couple of weeks now, well not in the evenng/weekends as I didn't have the necassary gear. My Gore Phantom11 arrived yesterday and im picking up my DHB's and Crud's on Saturday. Roll on Sunday:biggrin:

As for the commute, i have waterproofs but just wimped out this week really:blush: though the gale blowing at the mo is making me think that was a good choice:thumbsup:

There are definitely fewer bikes at work, and some of the ones chained to the racks have been there, abandoned and untouched, for the last 6 weeks (I know because I've counted as I'm reporting abandoned bikes to security).

Strangely though, the gym and changing rooms are far busier these days - up until about 4 months ago I used to have the place pretty much to myself when I got in at 6.30'ish. Not so now!

I do still find it crazy though - people will jump in a car and drive less than ten miles so that they can then go and get some exercise in the gym.

When I started mid summer there were two elderly gentleman I would pass every morning regular as clockwork, I could tell if I was late by when I met them. One of them finally spoke, it was the last time i saw him

They both disappeared on the same week so now its just me

You've seen those two old gentlemen as well ???

They were killed by a stray bomb in 1942.

Rain is becoming the no-no for me. I cycled through the rain a couple of times and soon after had my brake pads plus cables (which had picked up some corrosion) replaced. Not that expensive, but it seems the bike suffers in the rain and causes things to wear out at a faster rate.

Besides, cycling on dry days only gives plenty of cycling. Occasionally taking the tube (my other commute option) is not that bad, as long as I do it a max of 2-3 days a week.

Keep the cables clean and lubricated then it shouldn't be a problem.

Well I checked today - 18 racks and most had two bikes attached to them just a handful that didn't. As I work part time I had wondered in the past if some were abandoned but I asked someone who works longer hours and was told not nearly everyone of the bikes disappear at night (apart from the one that is on top of a locker).

I don't think the season affects the staff at one of my jobs, it's an environment centre, so pretty much everyone cycles or walks in.

Where I work is sort-of environmental. The intranet says back in 2007 24% cycle, 20% car drive, 20% walk, 17% bus, 16% train/tube, 3% car passenger; and cycling's probably gone up since then.

I was hoping the winter would get me a space on a better-placed rack to lock my bike to (nearer the door, I'm don't get here early enough to claim one). So far though, it's not happened.

My friend works for an environmental charity. They have a some policy activty that discourages car use. There's some reward for not using the staff car park, so their car park is always empty but next doors is always full.

Well, I rounded a corner this morning to see a positive wave of cyclists starting off from the lights. Must have been a dozen. One Brom, at least, a couple of ladies on sit-up-and-begs, and a variety of chaps on a variety of bikes. It was a great sight. I do like living in York.

Three bikes in the rack at work today, me, the boss, one other - but that can be normal in summer too.

The hardcore are still here. My neighbour (and son's school mate's dad) was out - we had a chat.....in the hissing rain, then I was scalped by a quick MTB (he was quick when I still had my slicked MTB) due to staying with a friend...... when we parted, the quick MTB'er got nuked.......

I didn't see another cyclist no my commute today, either on the way in or the homeward journey. I work in a large shopping center and there is usually 3 or 4 bikes parked in the cycle bays, but today I was the only one.

I admit to having ducked the bike commute during the recent wet days - only did 2/5 last week, and 3/5 this week. However there are a couple of factors which should increase my hit ratio in the next few months:
1) Hopefully Santa will bring me some wet weather cycling gear and mudguards for the bike.
2) Need to get fit for ski-ing in Feb/March.
3) Taken a policy decision to do the last 1/3 of my commute on the roads rather than the canal on all days when the ground is wet to avoid the large, muddy puddles.

Do you also notice that they try and park as near as they can to the front door!!!

My cycle route is pretty much deserted all year due to the times I commute (04:45-05:15) But I have noticed that the flash looking BTW scheme bikes have gone from the cycle park.
I have toyed with the idea of giving myself December off, is that soft?
