I've just brought a Turbo, I used one for years, brought my first one about 1993, eventually stopped using it, had my close encounter with Angina and brought another one and used it till about 5 years ago, now I'm retired and got time I've brought another one.

It's just weather. You soft southerners are finally getting a taste of the weather I was raised to believe was normal!
This is you....

I'm busy tricking my newly freed-up garage into a cold-war style turbo-cave, but I've yet to get Mrs Dr Bollo dressed in a KGB uniform.

There's plenty of tech to keep you interested depending on what you're trying to achieve - The likes of TrainerRoad (my favourite) and PerfPro are good for the serious structured stuff, while Zwift and Bkool are more social. Barring Bkool, which I think still needs a smart trainer, you don't have to spend a lot on extra kit to get most of these up and running. Ultimately though, you either find this kind of thing boring or you don't.

....But I've bought myself a turbo trainer. The weather out here for the last two months has been day after day of gales or rain and often both together. My job means I have to be out in it most days anyway and I'm buggered if I'm going to cycle in it as well, so in order to keep some semblance of riding fitness I've had to bite the bullet.

Maybe I'll get to like it...
:headshake:

The Turbo gets used to check the bike's running okay after any maintenance. It's a useful bike stand in the interim. It'll be a cold day in hell, before I use the thing like a hamster does a wheel.

Ah, the voice of experience. A hamster uses a wheel because it has no other alternative way of exercising. Much the same way as some people use turbos in this weather. If you are serious about training (which you clearly aren't), then it would tend to be used as part of a regular training regime.

I can only face my turbo if I have something else to do. Tried knitting but if you drop your thread it can get caught in the rear wheel so a no no.
Storage Wars or Pawn Stars is a TT favourite.
I need to make some space in my garage before I use it again.

I have just purchased one as I did not get out last weekend and I'm not normally in from work until 7-8pm so getting out during the week is problematic.

I looked at Zwift and Bkool but that would mean a new PC. I have a couple of sufferfest videos and looked at the turbotripping videos to alleviate the boredom.

I think the key is that you have to work towards some kind of goal or plan just sitting on a turbo staring at the garage door will inevitably become boring

One of my neighbours did a 62 mile ride on Zwift!

^^ This. It never ceases to amaze me how many people complain about turbos being 'boring', for this reason. Staring at a wall is always going to be boring, regardless of whatever else you happen to be doing at the time....

If you can use a garmin or other bike computer and constantly monitor all the data such as speed, cadence, HR, it really helps pass the time (aswell as using music or tv). Intervals of some description (they don't have to be maxed out ones) also help because it gives you something to focus on. The most "boring" sessions are probably recovery spins where you are lightly spinning in zone 1 HR for a prolonged period! All the guys I know who train for TT's are using the turbo all week and maybe getting out once or twice on the road for "base" miles, around 35 - 40 mile rides @ approx 17 - 18 mph.
I find the turbo doesn't replicate the real world road rides, and why would it, there's no wind no gradients etc. My HR can stay relatively low on a turbo unless I max out, where as on the road it is far higher. Which is why most believe you should mix turbos with the occasional road ride if you can.

Just broke my Turbo, going to be a month at least before it gets replaced by Amazon. Part of me is very annoyed that it breaks exactly when I need it, but part of me is happy as it was a pig to calibrate and the resistance was always too tough. Looks like I will be spending more time in the gym for a while.

The last time I was in a gym I was still at school. Whatever reservations I have about turbos, I deeply love them compared to gyms.
