My "modern" car is a 2006 Toyota Corolla. It is quite simple to do the basic servicing like oil and filter changes, spark plugs, brake pads, air filter (don't even need any tools for that one).. It only needs oil changes every 10k miles (but as a result of my sympathy for engines it gets done about every 6 or 7k). Brake pads last so long that they are almost fit and forget (about 30k miles the front pads lasted IIRC). It has now done 104k miles and just keeps going. Not a spot of rust to be seen either.
I seem to remember our family car in the late 60's being a Hillman Minx which needed a full service every 4k miles. As well as oil and filter it needed points adjusting, tappets adjusting, new brake pads/shoes, greasing of all sorts of different bearings and shafts, transmission oil, tracking and wheel alignment adjusting, brakes bled, coolant changed, etc. etc.. Even after all that it would regularly refuse to start. It could only dream of reaching 100k miles without major surgery.
Progress? Oh yes!

My dad had a Hillman Minx, it was the oddest colour I have ever come across....it was a mixture of cream, grey, brown.....I wondered if the factory ran out of paint and just mixed up what they had left in one big vat. When I asked my dad about the strange colour he said it was "strawberry".

Did you ever see ‘Ice Cold in Alex’? They did this to move an ambulance up a steep sand hill.

I remember my old Austin 7 special had cable brakes.

Now theres a reminder of a tale from my dad.
He and a mate nicked one of them Austin 7s to get home to Bacup from Rawtenstall
They went over Crown Point in thick fog..

Brakes went soft on a steep decent, my dad was driving and said we cant stop and bailed out!!!
He ran straight into a dry stone wall and knocked himself out...

He came round and noticed the car sat a few yards up the road!!
Sat in the car was Johnny Walsh having a fag, he said to dad " where the feck have you been"
Its bloody freezing and you piss off knowing i cant drive

My Dad had (what can best be described as) a dog poo white one.

It was the worst car he ever owned (and he had a few Marinas too)

The best car he ever owned (and wish he still had) was this Escort

My first car is still in the showroom.

Actually I will always have an affection for VW Beetles. My step mum had one.Didn't like her but the car had character and my dad had an Audi 80 I think it was.

I have to agree with the point the OP is making. A couple of months ago both sidelight bulbs had gone in my B6 Passat. YouTube told me I'd have to take the front of the car off to replace them! "Fortunately" though someone crashed their car into mine and i got the bulbs replaced for free at the garage/workshop.
I had the same issue with my Skoda ... youtube/car forums told me to take wing panels off!!! Thankfully there's a wee motor shop in my town. I bought the bulbs there, and the shop guy fitted them for me in 10 mins, with no extra charge (just the promise of repeated custom; easy, as he also sells some cycling items). And he didn't need to dismantle the car

Rectangular headlamps rather than the standard round ones. That must have been the "super" model. We had one too; a 1300 "super" 1970 model. CMP 995H (how can I remember that but not what I did 5 minutes ago?).

I remember loads of number plates from my chilhood and early driving years.
I've not a clue what my current van or car number is?
