Considering this plonker forgot where the loud peddle was in their toy car I think I was rather refined in my outburst if you can call it that.

Doing about 25 to 30 towards a T junction, did my normal check before a T junction and thought they had seen me - I was lit up like Blackpool illuminations.
Might need to get a louder front?

The problem with all this is that we go out and buy bigger louder shinier brighter stuff...costs us dosh and they still behave like muppets.

Now if I had not slowed and hit them I think they would have got shirty and I would have fallen off.

Next time I think I may be less refined!

Don't think you need more lights. Unless you are going to buy a uber light that will make you look like a motorbike... as I think they saw you, but suffered from 'Its only a cyclist, I've loads of time they don't do more than 10mph...'

not sure they were actually signalling a left turn that is why I thought they were pulling in possibly - or was it the timing of the flashes?

Unfortunately there are many drivers out there who are unable to judge the speed of bikes and as has already been said many can't even imagine bikes attaining those speeds which is why, as a matter of self survival I don't ride flat out in urban environments.

Looks like a case of "I'm going to get out in front of that cyclist whatever speed he's doing". He saw you.

I was decidedly less refined tonight when an old bloke firstly pulled out from the right hand road entering the main road I was on to come alongside me of me, then immediately secondly signalled left as he was alongside and did a full-on left hook, while his wife bemusedly looked at me from her passenger window, probably muttering something about "no need for that sort of language". He apparently had no intention of changing his course of action, whatever language I used.

Interesting point, and one which the OP might want to think about.

Out of interest, what sort of lighting arrangement do you have? Theory says that it is easier to judge the speed of a vehicle at night when it has two solid lights mounted as far away from each other as possible (as in a car), as the lights appear to get further apart the closer they get to you - Of course none of this helps if they don't look.

Hmm, as far as I can see the OP was sensible - firstly riding at a perfectly legal speed, and then when a plonker either deliberately or accidentally was a plonker, safely took avoiding action. On the whole, if I can ride at the close to or the same speed as motor traffic in town, I reckon it causes fewest problems ... as long as you are ready for the inevitable plonkers. I'm not going to be cowed into bimbling along at 10mph just because some drivers are plonkers.

I am not suggesting the OP wasn't sensible. It's more of a self preservation angle I was thinking of. If drivers can't judge a cyclists speed, perhaps even more acute at night, then it might be a good idea to drop the speed a little. 25-30mph is fast on a bike and is well above the norm.

I have and think that I was of a reasonable velocity - i.e. below that of the cars around me and highly visible.
I think we should have some "public information" videos like int he 70s made - anyone offering?
