Almost as bad as drafters on the commute are others cyclists who because your on a roadie must overtake you , then run out of steam about another 200 yards up the road.
One guy does it to me regularly on a boardman team hybrid, the fact that his bike is newer , lighter and he has not got another 15 llbs or so in panniers, lights etc makes me laugh as he makes a big show about getting in front then blows up . Next year i will ask him if he fancies coming out on a club run with me and se how far he gets, might be a bad idea he might actually be fit and leave us all for dead
I shouldn't worry ... i've seen a few "christmas fad cyclists" locally round the fens, usually wearing
all the gear on very expensive bikes that don't belong on pot-holed roads.
Anyway, as you say they always like to overtake just to show off.
Most of the time i'm riding around 150bpm heart rate (not flat out) and if i hold my speed,
most of these gear w*nkers start to loose their energy and start to slow again.
Eventually i'll gain ground, then as i pass i'll wind up the extra 40bpm "reserve" just to show 'em.
I'm in no way as fit as some of you guys ... i've probably got another two years to go until i'm ready
for time trialling again, but i can certainly show up these jokers who get their hugely
expensive bikes out once a year!!
