Why do people hate someone on their wheel so much? Bobet was talking about racing, and a unpleasant tactic, but elsewhere in racing domestiques are doing their job when they give the star a tow. Working together in a break is fine, so is it that the commuting wheel sucker does not do their bit? If it's not a race are you not happy to be strong enough to help a slower rider? Or does it just worry people?

Not enough cyclists on the road in Swindon to ever worry about being drafted.
Same here in North Wales.

I draft all the time

nasty headwind? draft anyone going vaguely quick enough, I'm riding to work and it makes it easier

feeling tired? draft anyone going vaguely quick enough, lets me go quicker than otherwise, I'm riding to work

feeling shoot hot? draft anyone going bloody quick, lets me go bloody quick too and it's a laugh to be a bit racey on the commute

you're not dragging anyone down, it's a moveable feast, anyone that can keep up with me is welcome to draft me, sometimes there's even some give and take although I'm terrible at it, good at drafting, terrible at leading

I don't really mind being drafted and if someone flies past me I'll see if I can get on the wheel and stay there for a bit. All good fun playing at racing.

Don't have a problem if someone follows me- it feels a bit wierd if they don't say anything but they're not likely to be axe murderers.

I had someone draughting me a couple of months ago ... the thing is i was on a mountain bike as i was intending to drop
off tarmac now and again during that ride.
The guy hung on my tail in a headwind for about a mile, until we went round a right corner and i suddenly moved my arse
over rear wheel, up the kerb and bolted down a track.
Funny how he didn't follow on his road-bike.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Almost as bad as drafters on the commute are others cyclists who because your on a roadie must overtake you , then run out of steam about another 200 yards up the road.
One guy does it to me regularly on a boardman team hybrid, the fact that his bike is newer , lighter and he has not got another 15 llbs or so in panniers, lights etc makes me laugh as he makes a big show about getting in front then blows up . Next year i will ask him if he fancies coming out on a club run with me and se how far he gets, might be a bad idea he might actually be fit and leave us all for dead :tired:

I shouldn't worry ... i've seen a few "christmas fad cyclists" locally round the fens, usually wearing
all the gear on very expensive bikes that don't belong on pot-holed roads.
Anyway, as you say they always like to overtake just to show off.
Most of the time i'm riding around 150bpm heart rate (not flat out) and if i hold my speed,
most of these gear w*nkers start to loose their energy and start to slow again.
Eventually i'll gain ground, then as i pass i'll wind up the extra 40bpm "reserve" just to show 'em. :hello:

I'm in no way as fit as some of you guys ... i've probably got another two years to go until i'm ready
for time trialling again, but i can certainly show up these jokers who get their hugely
expensive bikes out once a year!!

Why don't you say hello to him next time you see him- he might be a really friendly bloke.

how odd following this point

a big chap on a rather Hoxtonista fixie bombed past me this morning approaching the end of Cambridge Heath Road, there was a fair head wind so I got after him and had barely got to a loose drafting position when he swerved away across the lane and waved me through, not a runner as the lights went red at that point, much theatrical cursing to himself, I asked what the problem was

'riding behind someone is rude' he said

is it? news to me if so, I've done and had it done loads of time without a single comment, sometime some pointing of potholes or signals regarding braking etc from the swisher riders but never that

I pointed out that all he had to do was wave me past/away if he wasn't happy but he had the right hump, can;t decide whether he was a club rider with proper etiquette or a Hoxtonista with madeup rules, I suspect the latter mind
