identity theft help

I have just received some items in the post that I did not order from a UK company I have never done business with. My name and address on the invoice are correct but the bank details (thankfully) are not, for a 24 month contract on a direct debit.

I immediately thought 'identity theft!' Because I'm kinda paranoid like that.

What do you guys think and what should I do next?

Is it a well known company or a shady back street joby that it's from ?

A well known UK phone supplier.

Probably just a name mistake. ID theft would include your bank details, but more than that; you wouldn't know much about the ID theft until the bills were left unpaid after an amount of time.
People don't commit this kind of crime then have the goods sent to the person. They will use your details, but have a different delivery address.
This happened to me a couple of years ago with a smartphone. My DD, name etc, but delivery address in Scotland.

I only ask as a friend of mine had the same thing happen although he in haste thought oh cool a free phone I'm having that. A month later got a bill for over £700 sent to his home address (same as where they had sent the phone ) through the post for the hand set price and the calls and texts he had used on it. So basically he got scammed due to his own greed. I'd send it back to where it came from if I were you and make sure you send it recorded delivery.

Wait and see if you get a call in the next day or two apologising for the mistake, and informing you that a 'courier' will be round to collect it.

So I guess next step is to contact the phone supplier and arrange for them to have it picked up? Is it a good idea to contact police and/or ActionFraud?

I'm sure this is a scam where you'll shortly receive a call that a 'courier' will be calling to collect it. It will be collected but you'll still have the bill and the baddy will have a free phone.

Well spotted! @mustang1, beware of 'couriers' looking to take this phone off your hands!

If you are feeling up to it you could try to take a photo of the courier when he comes to collect it.
