I've just finished the book "It's all about the bike", not a bad read. If you want the basic plot, a man decides to build a custom bike to do him the rest of his life and travels the world picking up the components for it. There's obviously a lot more to it than that........

If you decided to buy one bike, what would it be?

Rules (remember it's only a bit of fun  )

Must be off the shelf and available for anyone to buy
Budget - £1 - £5000

Feel free to leave your selection with pics or a link and the reasons why you've chosen it

Surly Disc Trucker, I think. Stick mudguards on the base spec, change the tires for 42c Continental Comfort Contacts and swap the barcons & brake levers for STi levers. Should still have plenty left out of the budget for a "New Bike!" party an' all.

Not the lightest or fastest bike, but capable of doing most of what I want to do.

Probably my Planet X CX bike. He does everything I want it to do, it's quick with road type tyres on it and super useful with it's little knobblies on. I have had him for nearly 2 years now and adore him.

I'm a firm believer in the saying: "There's a bike for every ride", so my one bike would have to be versatile.

That would be a mountain bike with loads of bosses for luggage, mudguards, etc, and plenty of clearance for various tyres.

Many mountain bikes fit that criteria, but to pick a model this bike from Shand would do the job nicely.

I may as well have a Rohloff hub, and you can order it with a rigid fork.

Hmm...... it would have to be the tandem. A load Luger that can still be ridden by one person, but much more fun in so many ways with 2
People on it.

I'm getting old. I'm seriously considering simplifying my cycling life by selling all my bikes and investing in a single old fashioned Pashley roadster of some sort. Genuinely, seriously.
I saw a Pashley Guvnor being collected by someone in Evans a while ago.
I almost ordered one there and then. What a beautiful bike!
