You know, I know, we all know that your remark is nothing more than fatuous point scoring.
To a first approximation, the Internet is nothing more than fatuous point scoring. But that aside...

You know, I know, we all know that we are supposed to drive in such a manner that someone else's mistake doesn't automatically result in their injury or death. That the majority of drivers much of the time choose not to do this is a reflection on the sad state of humankind and/or the universe, but it nevertheless remains their choice.

The possibility of encountering an unlit cyclist on the road is entirely foreseeable. If you run into one in circumstances such that you're going to spend the rest of your life dwelling on all the things you could have done to avoid it, that seems to me distinctly less optimal an outcome than having done one or more of those things in the first place.

It should take more than a single mistake for someone to lose a life in a public place.
