To continue my eyesight sermon, because I think you should get that bike out of the box and on the road:
When you have the chance practice riding in a straight line. this means an even pedal stroke and no swinging of the shoulders. wear stuff that increases your visibility and unclip one foot at the first sign of a problem.

I do wear high viz stuff, not all over but enough and i always have my left foot unclipped when in slow moving traffic,or rough surfaces etc.I've always been careful but these incidents are happening more and more. When you say get that bike out the box i'm glad i didn't the other day and this was its maiden journey! Imagine crashing it first time out! I'll give it a few days but i don't think i'll change my mind. It's not the end of the world, some i know have given up road or any cycling altogether following accidents. I'm not that easily beaten!

Maybe you can send the bike back and get a CX in return.
+ 1 for pootling. We pootle more and more now.

That's what i was thinking of doing. I'll have a look later and see what they have. As for pootling i wish i could but the hills around here are too much. I drive to St Anne's every now and then to see my mum. I'm envious of the loads i see just plodding along at a nice pace on those nice and easy flat roads. You see little old ladies on Miss Marple type bikes but it wouldn't work around here!:heat:

So I will keep nagging away at this - if the change to a bike that takes wider tyres, or whatever advantage you thing a 'CX' will offer and this is a POSITIVE move I say go for it but if it is "I can't do this because I keep falling off therefore I am useless" kind of thing then count me out.
What is the problem with your eyes?

I have a detached retina in the right eye and slight floaters over the left one. I'm not saying that wider tyres will be safer but a bike with wider tyres will give me the chance to avoid roads sometimes.

xx( Colourful but tasteful as well! No the bike doesn't have to be a bright colour, infact i think high viz on bikes looks a bit cheap if there's too much of it. I hope you haven't got that bike? You haven't have you?!
Nope, no yellow bikes here. It's bumble bee rather than hi viz. I've had cars that colour in the past though

Happy bike hunting
