I have seen the Click'R but they look a bit cheap and cheerful, and I have concerns about the clip mechanism being too light for me.

Ankle bands are just daft.
The clip mechanism on click'r is not too light for you, and the top end ones don't look cheap and cheerful.

But, yer, ankle bands are just daft. ;0

So what would you say is the difference between Click'R and regular SPD?

I have a pair of these PD-T400 Click'R

The mechanism is a bit easier to disengage than my regular SPD pedals, but basically I don't notice much difference at all in use. I soon forget which pedals I have once I've been riding for a bit.

My subjective 2p...

On Click'R the twist angle to release is around half what it is on spuds. I think this makes way more difference than the lighter spring but the lighter spring makes them easier to get into. I've never had a problem, even when riding fixed, with unclipping accidentally. Also the solid plastic body doesn't have a painted surface that scuffs up/off and looks scruffy.
