"The driver of the bin lorry that crashed in Glasgow in December 2014 killing six people has appeared in court on dangerous driving charges.

Harry Clarke, 59, allegedly drove a car dangerously on 20 September 2015 knowing he had had two previous medical incidents.

Mr Clarke made no plea or declaration when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He was released on bail pending further investigations.

Mr Clarke faces an alternative charge of culpably and recklessly driving the vehicle on 20 September.

He is also accused of committing fraud between June and September 2015 by pretending to an insurance company that he had a driving licence when it had been revoked.

Clarke, from Baillieston in Glasgow, faces a further charge of making a false statement in an application for insurance in May 2015."

Has anyone given a coherent reason as to why he was never properly prosecuted?

The Lord Advocate ruled there was "insufficient evidence in law". (There's a brief video in that link) This is despite it being known that Clarke lied in licence renewal forms submitted to DVLA.

He was charged in September 2015 with dangerous driving of his car, knowing he was medically unfit and while his licence had been revoked for the bin lorry crash. He is also accused of fraud in lying to his car insurers to obtain cover. The trial for those offences is taking a suspiciously long time to come about.

It appears Harry Clarke, the driver who lied about his medical history and killed six people with his bin lorry, has admitted culpable and reckless driving on a separate occasion just nine months after those deaths.

"Harry Clarke, 60, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court where he pleaded guilty to driving a car in the city on September 20 2015 to the danger of the public, despite his licence having been revoked for medical reasons. "

I can't imagine they'll give him any meaningful sentence.
