Yes it seems to be a recurring problem with Shimano STI shifters had the same problem on both my bikes So as I was advised by a gent on here I make a point of checking the cables at least once a year and making sure that I haven't got a frayed cable end around the shifter end and when inserting new cable smearing a trace of silicon on the new cable as its inserted to outer wire They is one other thing that happened to me recently was the same problem in that I could only get three gears to work on the cassette that was after cycling though some very suspicious looking mud On returning home found that cable at shifter end was sticking So removed and soaked shifter mech then lubed cable find its working ok now
