Following on from Sandra6's Cycling in the rain thread, what if any exercises do you do or recommend that compensate for being unable to do the real thing, apart from the obvious bike trainers?
I sometimes use a 6.5kg weight and a chair. It's a bit primitive but i find that sticking the weight in a strong rucksack then stepping on and off a chair for half an hour strengthens my legs and gets the heart racing which is what we do while cycling right? It's also very boring so doing it in front of the telly or listening to the radio helps. If i'm feeling full of energy i'll do the half an hour in one:ohmy:, though it's usually in three stages with a minute or so in between.:heat:

Walk up and down stairs repeatedly until you get so bored that you'd rather cycle in the rain!

I use a treadmile when it's dark out. Also means i can do a little run, which strengthens your leg muscles

An hour on a £60 fan turbo trainer can give you a hell of a good workout and leave you feeling absolutely shelled if you use it with a heart rate monitor.

I can happily do 8+ hours on bike or run for 2 hours outside. Put me on a turbo/exercise bike/treadmill and i'm ready to give up after 5 minutes.

So I've decided to invest in lights/winter riding kit instead of a turbo trainer.

Go on, tilt your head!
Do circuits at your local gym. Great for all round fitness and it gets your heart rate up very quickly!
