Internal vs external cabling

External cables require extra holes in your frame - this has been known to be a stress riser leading to cracks.

That's interesting, I've not heard of this happening, is there some info you can point me to?

I think the very introduction brifters would have been such a shock to the imaginary posters of Cyclechat in 1990 that I doubt anyone would have cared where the gear cable went.

You clearly weren’t on alt.rec.cycling back in 1990. Such discussions did take place on the Internet back then.

As I plan to avoid the bloody things, I haven't bothered to swot up on the subject before! So luckily, google has saved me (hope this link works for you):

Looks like it might be mainly a Ti problem. Certainly the chap a mile away got a very new Ti bike replaced under warranty for this reason IIRC.

Matticus are you getting internal and external confused ? External won't need holes in the frame.

Ah just get etap gears and use your feet to brake. Voila. No cable issues.

Surely someone has come up with electronic brakes? Simply pair your smartphone with the brakes via bluetooth and when you wish to stop open the app and press the stop button. What could possibly go wront?

they would probably still squeal into your bluetooth earpiece....

The old [gear cable] out of the side of the housing Shimano type are less susceptible to cable fraying than the [new!] under the tape type.
