When I worked (NHS) we could access the hospital intranet for patients test results and that was monitored...if you were caught accessing results which weren't in your area of work you had to explain yourself! We all had individual log on accounts so IT could see what anyone had been accessing.
You could google stuff and get onto sites like Argos, Facebook, etc. but anything remotely dubious was locked out.
TBH, we never had the time to do anything other than what we were meant to be doing!

My last place was heavily restricted, I couldn't even access CC

Happily I now work elsewhere and as I'm on the road all day my internet access is via my mobile so I am totally unlimited now, and I have unlimited data as well so it's all good

Where I used to work each depot around the country could access the internet but only by intranet though routed through a single place, which would monitor what was being searched.
I was booted off once, while looking up tyre side wall markings for training purposes!

it's not as if I typed in 'Big rubbery inflatables' into the search engine

Completely free access... we all have a workstation with open access, based on trust and seems to work but then we are all of a certain age.! It only got abused by one person and he no longer works for me.

Completely open, but there again I do work for myself.

As a Sys Admin and head internet gate keeper my mantra is "block everything and make 'em beg".

(I do work in a school and we do have a duty of care)
One of the sites I used to work at was also a boarding school, so we were the same. pretty much block most things for students and unfilter is staff requested, but I had a really nice system that allowed for staff to have different levels of access to students and IT and also for different times of day. Students also gained additional access at night, and as the got older...

But one of the companies I worked for everyone had access to everything and had legitimate access to be accessing hard core porn at work as part of their job... I used to have to regularly send out emails requesting people stay away from xyz site because it had been hacked again and was sending out viruses... made my life, erm more interesting and some of the men a touch embarrassed when having to deal with a female member of IT!

I need to find parts for a fairly old customised imported car with rather oversized lights at the front.*
So I googled 'middle-aged escort with large headlamps, Brazilian'*

*No I didn't

Can't access facebook but can access porn. It seems the IT department have their own priorities.
But as mentioned above the company handbook is written in such a way that they could make your life difficult if they wanted / needed to.

In my last work a guy had managed to disable the firewall and internet filters on one of the company servers and was downloading hard core porn onto a hard drive. Needless to say he was sacked, in fact it was the first time I'd seen someone being escorted out the building by security.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
You do not have access to a pc unless you job role needs it and the filtering is pretty tight , a good 80 % of the workforce do not use a pc on a day to day basis so they do not have access on company property and if they did it would have to be in breaks assuming you could get on a pc as there is about 1 per 30 people and usually one of your immediate superiors is using it.
