Mrs BG wants to watch French German and Italian TV and just saw an ad for a laptop dongle that suggested that it could do that. Anybody had any experience of them please? I'll presume I'll need a 30 ft aerial..........

Many satellites cover much of europe, it is only in this rather odd set of islands that people believe Mr Murdoch's propaganda that satellite=sky.

If you point to slightly different bits of the horizon you can get all kinds of channels, whether they are worth watching is anybody's opinion. Many STBs throughout europe will pick them up. So yes, the dongle probably does work.

You're best off researching it and then seeing what channels you can get on what set of satellites www.kingofsat.net is the best.

I'm afraid I don't watch them myself but it's not a greatly challenging task of working out what you could get, as I don't watch the channels I've not really looked into it in detail.

This can be a big subject. It depends what your aerial can receive. There are lots of free to air stuff available via satellite dish. The BBC and other freesat channels are available using a computer tuner or set top box if your dish is pointing in the correct direction which is handily on the same satellite transmitter and SKY use. They are unencrypted. My set top box cost £30 before freesat officially kicked off. I also bought a disec motor for the dish so it can be moved to use other satellites so we can get foreign telly for the Greek channels for Mrs D and to help the rest of us learn the language. I think eurosport is free to air in some places but I haven't looked for a long time so cannot say for certain. Apart from a friend testing it by plugging it into the cable from his sky dish it has not been used yet. Not go to around to putting the motor and dish up yet as my wife wants the thing installed but expects me to do it by stopping time rather than giving me the time to get it done ;) There is also the issue of cracked encryption on satellite systems but I wouldn't like to discuss that here as it's illegal and therefore naughty.

Digital spy is a good place to look for this stuff.
