As I'm pedalling along on Old Reliable, I'm getting an irritating "click" from the crankset somewhere. It's a bit more pronounced when more effort is put on the pedals (e.g. up hills); it's not there when freewheeling; it seems to disappear in wet weather; it's not the chain, and it's not mech rub.

Ideas?

^^^^^^^this.

I had a clicking in similar circumstances last summer, that disappeared after removing and reattaching the left-hand pedal. I had narrowed the noise down to the left-hand downstroke so that gave me a clue where to look.

Also check pedals are tight.
That's what I'm hoping, I'm going to take them off, grease the threads and put them back, but I want to be prepared if that's not it.

If you ride clipless try giving the spring in the clip in part/ hinge of the pedal some grease. It cured my clicking problem in my SPDs.

I thought that and I'm hoping not, seems to turn freely enough.

Worth trying the following (after trying some of the easier things upthread perhaps)

Remove cranks, clean interfaces.

While you're at it remove BB, clean threads.

Apply grease or antisieze stuff to threads/ interfaces

Reassemble.
