Last couple of days as I come into Fenchurch Street Station in the City there has been a cyclist waiting to get a train on the main concourse. He has a really nice red Wilier road bike and Fulcrum wheels and Michelin racing tyres. I was trying to get a look at the groupset and chainset today but couldn't make out what it had. The bike was fairly dirty and hadn't been maintained well. It's possibly an Izoard Centaur or similar.

Thing is, the bike and the man didn't match. For all its qualities the bike has platform pedals on it and the man with it was dressed in Civvies (Hoodie, Jeans, trainers). For want of a better description he appeared to be from the wrong side of the tracks - just not the type you would expect to see with this bike.

Am I being overly suspicious? Do I have grounds for bringing this to the attention of the Transport Police?

You don't suppose he could be a commuter do you?

You could engage him in conversation about the bike. Not 'did you nick it?' but 'nice bike, what groupset have you got?' etc. If he's got a nice race bike like that and knows sod all about I'd probably be minded to think he aquired using alternative methods.

Always a tricky thing to judge by appearances. Why not stop and have a chat about things bike next time. But don't judge till you have some facts. Ooh and you'll be able to update us on the group set :biggrin:

He was way too fat, ugly and thug like to be a roadie ( I know I shouldn't judge.........). If I come out of this needing hospital treatment, it's all your fault. :biggrin:

* ducks *

No roadie I know would have left that bike in such bad condition. It had mud and road grime all over it.

'fat, ugly and thug like'? I'd leave well alone. The chances of it not being legitimately his are quite high. The chances of it ever being reunited with its rightful owner are vanishingly small. The chances of him rearranging bits of your body if you engage are probably medium to high. I don't like the odds, given such a poor likelihood of any positive outcome. It's very public spirited of you to think twice about it, but personally, I'd steer clear. Life throws enough grief our way without us going out looking for it...

I may like living dangerously. And the British Transport Police are 20 metres away.

Wade in. Save the bike. One day it might be your bike that gets nicked and you'd want someone to step in and get it back! Also...if they never find its rightful owner, IT COULD BE YOURS!!!

Offer him £50 and some pies for it - he'll accept and not only will it confirm it's nicked, you get a nice cheap road bike. Or you get a smack around the chops. Either way we're happy :biggrin:

He is probably a member of this forum then.:biggrin::biggrin:

Try posting in Commuting. In fact look out for a thread that begins with........'' I keep getting eyed up by some bloke while I am on my way to work''

We've obviously never met. :biggrin:

Hello Chris - I thought you were describing me for a moment, until I read the bit about the dirty bike:tongue:

Walk away from it...unless you know it is not his bike. In the past, I have seen 'possies' of kids here in Kentish Town/Camden etc, tearing around with Rolhoff, CF frames and endless goodies and I know...I just know. Like you perhaps.

i think it's his bike. if it belonged to a "real" roadie it would have clipless pedals. platform pedals match his trainers.

possibly he bought the bike to commute on. he may have bought it second hand or like me and my first bike, bought it coz i liked the colour. i had platform pedals on my bike for the first two years i commuted because i was nervous of going clipless. i also wore normal clothes (trainers, tracksuit top and leggings) because i didn't have any real cycle kit and at the time didn't socialise with "real" roadies. i rode like that for a couple of years.
