With that sort of damage, for me at least, it's a case of fix out on the road, ride home carefully and ditch for a new one!

I would down grade it to my pub/shopper bike and stick a new shiny something on my commuter/ leisure bike where reliability is more important.

If you've had a repeat puncture in same place -then there's your answer.

Whilst I'd certainly have give it a go as you have, a poster above is probably about right saying if you're asking the question, you already know the answer

Console yourself with the fact that I just put a £120 tyre on my car, picked up a screw which put ever such a small hole in the reinforcing fabric of the tyre meaning I had to spend another £120. However bad you feel, I feel worse.

I once had my motorbike serviced and picked up a screw in their yard which ruined the tyre. At least they had the decency to fit a new tyre free.

We need more people sweeping the streets, yards and garages.

I've been fired into a ditch, when a repaired tyre split to pieces, before. If anything damages my tyres visibly (split or hole bigger than a thumbtack) I replace it. It's not worth the risk, for less than 50 quid.

If you can see broken ends of carcass threads in the hole it's time to bin it. A hole with no thread damage can be fixed by patching inside but I'd put the tyre on the back wheel.

Replace it and the tube, before it goes!
It won't fail outside your house, but when you are going downhill at 30 mph in the dark miles from home, fact!

And it'll be raining and you'll have forgotten your pump, and your bus money
