interesting thought. There's not much call for cedar-strip canoes in South London. And, while I find the thought of the Monkey clan gliding over still waters, little Monkey wrapped in bark, Mrs Monkey flicking a fly over the nose of some fat trout, and you paddling skillfully, wearing (if I may be so bold) a check shirt in muted autumn colours, and each of you with beaver-skin hats on, I think that it's a matter of place and way of life. Dressing up and canoeing on a lake in Rutland in a recreational kind of way just wouldn't be the same thing.

So my life as a suburban boulevardier wants for nothing. I took delivery of a leather sofa from Johnny Looloos yesterday, which is about as middle-class as it gets, but the aquisition of the sofa inhabits a sort of shadow life that plays in the background. Spending an hour weeding the garden, or walking up the the High Street in search of the ripest tomatoes is what makes this quiet life of mine particular. The stuff just comes and goes.

I went to a classic car show once in America and there was a 1940s station wagon with the timber sides - all highly polished with matching canoes on the roof rack. Looked straight out of an old film set - cool.

My wife wanted to invest in a huge wooden chest to go at the end of the bed. But it was so expensive, I was forced to say "Do you really want me to spend my wad on your chest?"

I would love to own a holiday cottage somewhere on the North coast of Ireland.

A Ferrari would be nice but you'd never get the oppurtunity to use it.

The field next to my house... worth about 5-7K but neighbour won't sell. I'd make a vegetable patch / allotment out of it.
