I have my heating set to 17.5 deg in the mornings and evenings til about 9.30pm, so if it falls below that it kicks in. It is then set to 10 deg overnight. I did put it on last night when I came in from Guides because I was really cold and I also wanted to dry my base layer top after washing it.

I work irregular hours, so the timer is not good to me.
Boiler is set to come on if it goes below 10C if I'm not in ... to heat the cat
So far I have upped the temp only in the evenings when I'm about to have a shower, it is still quite mild here.

Am I the only one who doesn't get the reluctance to turn the heating on? If you're cold put it on, if you arent then don't! It doesn't matter what time of year it is .
Money as @ColinJ says is one reason, but also the effect on the environment, and health. I don't see the point in heating an entire house to the point where I could walk round in a T-Shirt.

Er ... lack of money?
Well I don't have a lot of money either but I still put the heating on for a wee bit because I'd rather not be sitting in the cold

Well I can understand that, but I'd still rather take the chill off. The village i live in is 1000ft above sea level and our house is exposed to the wind , so we are almost constantly cold as soon as it hits October until about April lol

Hah, typical - my combi-boiler is now giving up under the strain!

It has started creating a loud juddering noise sometimes when a pump or valve tries to turn off. It is like old-fashioned water hammer but in the heating system.

My landlady (sister!) is having a lot of problems getting tradesmen to come out to her 2 properties up here. We think it is because lots of work was created by the Boxing Day floods last year and they are still very busy repairing properties.

I'll chase her up to chase them up!

Meanwhile, I am back to using a fan heater. One advantage with that is that I can direct the warm air at the one part of me that actually feels cold - my feet.

I was a bit shocked by the fuel bills for last winter, my first in a house with central heating. I have reverted to heating just the room that I am in, and to the minimum comfortable temperature.
Which is why id rather use pay as go, that way I know exactly what I'm using and encourages me not to go too mad lol
