There's loads of new stuff that I have yet to try. My failing is that I expect things to be perfect first time.
Pork pies are the aristocracy of the world of pies. I have yet to be successful with them using pastry made by my own fair hand. However using pastry supplied by a friendly butcher, I achieved success. Aim for a texture akin to that of Play Doh.
Good luck!
P.S. increase the ingredients for the pastry by around 25% to leave a comfortable margin of error with the crust material. Delia does appear to sail close to the edge with quantities for pastry in her pie recipes.

Decided not to do the pork pie - one step too beyond - so instead going to make a cornish pasty. Flour, lard, butter, new 'tatties, skirt steak, egg.
I'm also buying a hamster today but the two events are not linked in any way. Compo' is next Thursday.

Can I be a taste tester?!!!!
Good luck! Just be careful not to cook the hamster..
Bit of a hectic week for me - got major events that may be a big stress so even though thursday is free, I can't commit in case stuff goes pear shaped and I need the rest of the week to rejig and sort.
Sorry would love to do that but wouldn't want you to book some leave for me to not turn up. I will know most likely by Tues eve if things are going to go topsy turvy but that's too late to book leave.

Second was a guinness/mince pie. Made by the Irish girl, of course.

Oh, that sounds very nice. I love a really well filled mince pie. My Dad used to make a really well filled plate pie with mince, we'd have half hot with mash and gravy and veg, and the other half cold next day with salad, especially potato salad. Not had it for ages. I don't bake. I should, but for one it's a bit of a faff.
