Hi all, I'm travelling to Mallorca in June with Jet2 and taking my bike over there. I've heard they can be a bit funny with the Di2 battery remaining with the bike when it's checked into the hold. Has anyone checked a bike into the hold recently with Jet2 and what were your experiences? Did you need to remove the battery from the bike which I'm guessing will be a pain in the ass or did they let it through?

I'm 95% certain I know what their default answer will be that it needs to be removed and put in hand luggage. My understanding is their policies mainly relate to eBikes but Di2 batteries get caught up in this. The question is more around people who have travelled with a Di2 equipped bike with Jet2 and whether it is enforced or they allow them on.

Well, I travelled with Finnair earlier this year and forgot about one small Li battery in my checked bag. They found it and removed it.
Why take the risk? Just to take it out. Is it very fiddly or something?

Usually up the seatpost, I believe…certainly the SRAM solution looks a lot easier for this kind of situation.

I wouldn't assume anything. Jet2 might give you one answer, but you may get something different at check in or as the bag get's scanned. Google does say Di2 is OK if the battery is in the frame, but I wouldn't rely on that - so many different interpretations even with staff at airports. Better to be safe than sorry.

So I can see why @RichT84 is concerned.
It's really worth asking the airline though because the regulations seem to distinguish between "loose" batteries (which I had confiscated) and those installed in equipment: Provided the batteries are either installed in the equipment or packed in a way that they are sufficiently protected against short circuits there should not be a problem. https://www.iata.org/en/programs/cargo/dgr/dgr-guidance-passengers/

I have flown with Jet2 a number of times over the last few years and never had a problem with DI2. To be fair though it's more the airport than the carrier that decides. CO2 being more of an issue over the years. Portugal bound in a week. Jet2 from Birmingham and I'm not planning on removing DI2 battery
Thanks all for the replies. Yes removing the battery looks like a bit of a pain so I'm keen to avoid if possible particularly as I've heard it's fairly easy to damage them or the connections. Phil, I am also flying out of Birmingham. If you could let me know how you get on it would be much appreciated!
That would be a nightmare for me as I have a 2017 Canyon Endurace which has Di2 and the battery is in the seatpost which unbelievably requires the removal of the bottom bracket to access it(!). And yes, I've had to do this when I replaced the battery but no way would I want to even consider this just for a holiday. So far when I've gone to Mallorca etc to ride I've hired a bike although I have considered taking my own. This makes me more than slightly reluctant.

It's probably cheaper to hire a di2 bike equipped bike ober there, and that will completely eliminate the risk that Jet2 damage your bike in transit, as an added bonus.
If going for a week or less it works out cost wise about even to hire a bike but any longer it's better to take own. A good Di2 bike is around 40 euros a day so not cheap.

You haven't factored in an expected cost for when Jet2 *(insert airline here) trash your best bike or mangle the mech hanger etc. nor the cost of bike travel box / bag

There is usually a tool supplied with Di2 for disconnecting and reconnecting cables. If you’re battery is in the seat post it is a simple task on undoing the clamp bolt and, carefully, sliding out the seat post. You then disconnect the cable and remove a circlip. The battery will then fall out.
The only pain is getting the seat post back to the correct height but a bit on tape around it to mark the location helps.
I have. Hire of bike box around £60 a week I think. Cost of extra luggage again about £60 depends upon airline. Might be a transfer cost at other end so let's say £150 all in to take own bike. A Di2 equipped hire bike is around £40 a day but if have for a week would probably be about £35/day.
So yeah, so although overall roughly similar cost wise probably not worth hassle for a week. However if you go for 10-14 days then it is worth it.
Obviously if you already have own bike box then cost less.
Other factors are some want to take own bike as it's got perfect set up for them also availability of bike at destination. If you happen to go over to Mallorca when say 312 is on then chances of getting bike are greatly reduced.
As for damage, yes that can happen but in a good bike box less likely. For decades I've flown abroad surfing and only once have I had a board damaged. Surfboard bags are way less protective than a hard bike box.
