Went to a car boot sale in a place in Cumbria called silloth.
There was a bloke with a van and about 40 push bikes all lined up.

She plumped for an Appolo ...(liked the colour) with full mudguards

I know the make is pretty poor but this thing looked like we had just rolled it out of the showroom. It was immaculate. We managed to get it for 40 quid.
She is absolutely delighted and is now looking for a wicker basket for the front so she can take it shopping ......only thing is she came back from halfords after purchasing a lock that she paid £10 quid for and i swear to god i could bite through this thing with my teeth.

Anyway im going to buy her a better lock and a basket.

Interestingly enough the guy also had an old Dawes with Reynolds 500 frame and a panier rack fitted with full guards. It looked like a lovely project bike and there was hardly a mark on the frame. Trouble was i couldnt fit it in the car what with buying the Appolo. So i might go back and see if its there next Sunday.

two things:

1) hope the bikes aren't stolen

2) the apollo bike should have the brake levers and calipers replaced at some point. my lbs did this for my wife's apollo, and the brakes now work a lot better.

regarding the possibility of those bikes being stolen, near where I live is a chap who gets his bikes from the Police, and he's very particular about buying 2nd hand bikes - plain and simple, he won't do it.

And I agree witht the point about brakes on the Apollo nedding replacement - I've done this on my wife's bike, and it makes a difference.

new brake levers/calipers don't have to be expensive shimano or similar like you'll find on wiggle. a lbs that sells and maintains mainstream everyday bikes (ie not a specialist road or mtb shop) should be able to supply and fit perfectly serviceable unbranded bits for much less than you'd pay for branded stuff, even online.
