I used Keo for years but now have Shimano M324 on my cross and road bike with regular MTB shoes. No more foot-slips at busy junctions on the road bike and perfect with mud on the cross bike. Even better, I can wear any shoes if I just nip to shop etc. I know they are probably a bit groovy and purists may baulk if they see them on my Colnago Master but I'm at the age now where practicality is priority over looks.

SPD's for all my bikes. Done numerous 100's and a couple of 200 plus rides with no problem. As above get a decent pair of stiff mtb shoes and you should not have any issues.
