+1 for the cheap mat, I keep one of my bikes in the back of the through lounge and I have a long thin rug I use to stand the bike on.

Local garden centre or helfrauds usually has tarpaulin boot liners like a large shallow box with handles.
I use one myself in wet/winter weather

I carpeted my hallway with short pile artificial grass - the sort of stuff sold for going round swimming pools, rooftop putting greens etc. Not too expensive, easily cleaned & doesn't stain easily. You could just do a bike lane from the door.
My trike normally hangs from the ceiling by an electric winch.

I have varnished floorboards so I get away with it

DO NOT spin the rear wheel up after putting it back on and just drop it onto the floor to stop it - You will end up scrubbing vigorously at a huge black mark on the floor trying to get rid before the other half gets home

Probably not good for the tyre either!

My 2 bikes are causing my wife and daughter endless problems! They can't get to their hair straighteners, and they're blocking the view of their crap Tv progs like Big Brother!
They fall over them on many an occasion to highlight how much of a "hindrance" they are, demanding that i "do something about it"! Yet when i suggest that i apply safe hooks so that i can hang them from the ceiling they say that they'll look ridiculous.
If they had their way my bikes would be outside with a plastic cover over them, but there's more chance of their television and it's naff programmes being shown the door than my 2 two wheeled friends!;)

This works for me. LINK

+1 and good for wheeling the bike in too. For storage even better is to put a hook in the ceiling and hang it vertically from the front wheel. Then put one of those green plastic greenhouse trays underneath it to catch the drips.

What about plastic carpet protector. It's clear and has grips on bottom side. So it doesn't move about. My mum used to have it on cream carpets.

I couldnt find that stuff in my local Wilkinsons or my local carpet shop, so ended up with a nice cheap off-cut of lino.
Going to be tackling the project today, so will let you know how it goes!

Also, picked up a lidl work stand for my new bike, and its awesome!
