I like the idea of e-books but I'd feel much less anxious leaving a real book by my sun lounger on the beach, when I went for a cooling dip, than a Kindle or the likes.

Missed the last post having gone to sort out my lunch.

I like to hold a book in my hand then put it back on the book shelf if the book is worthy of another read. I also have an android which you can get hold of epub files quite easily to which I have a large library! open source android for me anytime than ipad and kindle.

Calibre converts epub to mobi, which can then be used on the Kindle

Couple of pointers for folk who may be new to Kindles.

The non-fire versions, I.e the cheaper ones are visible in daylight. It's a serious factor if you want to read books outside.

The semi-tablet ones aren't visible.

We have a 3G keyboard edition kindle, it's has been sent for repair as the screens are fragile, so that is a big concern, compared to a tablet with gorilla glass. That said, a kindle is easy on the eye to read outside, the tab editions are not the same.

But, of you have a kindle account, then its very simple to have numerous devices synchronised, we do.

Free Kindle books. Lots of free books
I have paper books bought for me (birthdays, xmas). The ones I choose are are kindle now.
And for those concerned about bath/kindle incidents, paper gets wet too and have you never heard of ziplock bags? And you can still turn pages with the kindle in the bag, not so easy with a paper one.

I still enjoy the pleasure of browsing the shelves my local libraries...
I have nothing against kindles and their ilk, but I have no particular desire to own one. A few friends have succumbed and love to boast how many e-books they have. I wonder how many they have actually read rather than just 'collected'.

books all the way.

a few months back i bought a first edition of a book, published in 1890 or thereabouts. it is a thing of beauty, you can't get that 'thing' with kindle.

also found a lovely US paperback first edition of a Raymond Chadler collection in the 2nd hand stall at wetlands. it had a lovely smell and the feel of the pages was just.... aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh.

i can understand the convenience of the kindle, but just don't 'get' them.
