Found in the Yorkshire hills ...

:welcome: to the odd bit of West Yorkshire. I've been here 15 years and I'm still an outsider :surrender:

I'm in Ravensthorpe. Star Wheelers are bigger though.

Whereabouts are you? There's clubs in Brighouse (VS Cycles / Condor Road Club), Holmfirth (Holme Valley Wheelers), Calder Clarion are over towards Wakefield and in Dewsbury there's Batley Cycling Club. There's also an interesting club in Emley, who seem to do short-ish slow Sat am cafe/pub runs ( http://www.white-horse-emley.co.uk/wheelers.html ). Finally, this http://condorroadclub.blogspot.co.uk/ toward Halifax.

A number of others on here are also in Kirklees; @oldfatfool @SteveH @Kestevan @Cubist and others who can comment

I guess it depends what type of riding you're after and on what days?

Most do Sunday runs
All seem to do some sort of MTB riding
Calder Clarion do a popular Wednesday eve time trial
Some do Sat runs (Star Wheelers / Ravensthorpe / Emley)
Some do mid-week runs (Holme Valley / Ravensthorpe)
Most do racing, except Emley

Finally, if you want a ride out - I'm usually out Saturday morning through Huddersfield about 8am, up Holme Moss and across to Royd Moor (where I join up with Ravensthorpe's middle distance Sat run), back through New Mill for a 60-miler. Except tomorrow it'll be via Glossop, Snake Pass and Strines to Royd Moor! :B)

@wiggydiggy You could also try Westyorkshire Rough Riders, there's a link from Kirklees Council's site I think.

Or of course just PM me on here and if you want some rough stuff we can check some out. Where have you moved to?

Hi all^_^

Sorry for late reply - moving house is busy times lol No internet either at home until next week and the evil work IT guys have barred CC

Anyway, I'm in Mirfield, loving the town (village?) although I havent been out on the bike yet as my tyres needed relacing and I was waiting till I moved to order some (Vittoria City BTW)

Theres a few things on my todo list, firstly will be new tyres (delivery 3-7 WDs!) and then I'll be able to get out on some runs. I've got my eye on a 29er as well as having more space means I dont have to limit myself to just the hybrid/tourer I have ATM

I'm not a sporty/trainer rider as such and this lot http://www.white-horse-emley.co.uk/wheelers.html sound right up my street, if a little further away.

Have to pop off now as library closing soon, I'll be back on next week to get chatting.

@wiggydiggy Welcome to the area; you're literally 10 mins from me and I regularly do a run from Dewsbury-Holmfirth through Mirfield. You've got the advantage of a good LBS as well in Sowerby Brothers Cycles, even if sometimes they're a bit strange.

Emley are decent enough and are usually quite sociable.

However, in all seriousness - the Ravensthorpe club meet in Mirfield. You'd be daft not to try them as their Sat 9am ride goes from the 3 Nuns to the Oil Can Cafe near New Mill and is a steady (read 'slow') run out on all sorts of kit. There's an MTB run as well but, being a roadie, I rarely use my MTB so don't know much more. And yes, I'm biased, but like you I had a good look round the clubs to find one to join last year.

@DCLane

Ok you've sold me, I'll drop the Ravens lot an email when I'm back online proper (library again today) about joining a ride for a test run as the library has flagged their website as 'high risk' and I cant open it lol I dont mind joining more than 1 club, and probably will TBH after I'm still a member of my one in Leeds (Leeds Cycling Action Group).

Mirfield seems pretty cool so far, very quiet compared to city living and a good selection of pubs lol

LBS

Sowerby Bros seemed ok, I stopped by last week for a chat just to see how they were and TBH I like strange, they had some nice bikes in and I'll happily pay an LBS price for the new bike (late june likely). I've been recommended Blazing Saddles as well if you know of more?

@wiggydiggy If you're on Facebook, they're more active on their Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/41554187145/

I'd also forgotten about the Huddersfield branch of CTC, who do lots of slow/steady runs: http://www.huddersfieldctc.org.uk/

Blazing Saddles has a good reputation. @ColinJ will know more since they're in his town. My closest LBS is Hargreaves Cycles on Bradford Road in Dewsbury (lots of stock but it depends on who's serving at the time) http://www.hargreaves-cycles.co.uk/ and the very weird JB's Bike Shop in Ossett whose stock seems to date from the 1970's.

I'm on facebook but dont use it much, I can check their group though as its the way most groups communicate.

I see Martin Bolt is on there who I understand is a good man to know - Ive got a minor bone to pick with him re comments he made here http://www.examiner.co.uk/environment/environment-news/2013/03/12/it-s-our-world-council-plans-brighouse-to-huddersfield-cycle-link-86081-32968413/ - but that can wait for another day.

Blazing Saddles has been recommended by someone at my work as well so I think they are worth a visit.

Small Update

Ive put in a request on Ravensthorpe and Huddersfield Star Wheelers FB groups to join, when active I'll see if I can hop on a run with both this week and see which is for me

New tyres arrived, quick run out showed me my current track pump doesnt have the umph to fill them so one trip to get a Joe Blow 2 later and I'm ready for an extended commute tomorrow to try out the new rubber:bicycle:

I've seen the Thorpers request - it's probably worth joining their Sat 9am run tbh. I may be down on Thursday at the club meeting if the kit's turned up.
