Not for me .... I've got the same issues ....

You can buy Mac's stuff off him in a couple of weeks time then.

The corrosion proof fitting proposed by MacB will be better for not getting broken when moving things around, remember that tubes contain (or at least used to not sure if they still do) small amounts of mercury that is poisonous.

Also If the garage is unheated - the corrosion proof fitting will be better for longevity and also for light output in winter as the tube can come up to temperature quicker.

If you're not worried about the mercury, longevity of the fitting or light output go for the other ones.
MacB will sit in the warmth of his garage and smoke a few coffin nails...weigh up the pros and cons I'm sure.

got to say that is some awesome googling ability, or at least I hope you didn't just happen to have that kicking around

Oh and got an electrician coming round tomorrow, snow permitting, hopefully he'll lbe able to make sense of al lthe gibberish I've picked up from Teef and Co.

3BMs contribution has, as usual, been underwhelming, if he wasn't such a nice guy....oh hang on, scratch that.......

if you're buying fluorescents go for colour 860. Absolutely nothing else will do.

Darn, the underline made me think it was a link, so does that refer just to the tube? If I were to buy a twin batten that was billed as accepting T5 49 or 54 or 80w tubes would colour 860 just be a variant of tube that would fit in or do I need a special sort of batten?

Answers can't be too simple for me, probably why I understand 3BM so well

just googled and 860/865 is daylight, fortunately an option I'd already decided on for the garage, would you rate it for kitchen use as well?

absolutely - but if you have the choice put them behind an upstand, and have the light go upward. You'll be a changed man.

To be honest I'd put them in every office in the land. I did have 150 or so five footers put in to an office and the effect was stunning.

don't mess with 865 - just go straight to the 860s

Then just go on night rides...'Daylight' becomes relative. 6000k means that your fish will be happy in the sea of light. (Buy some spares for when they fail also, as a yellow tube alongside a 'white' one is just SO threeshadesmcginty...)

folks is it worth looking for 80w T5s or would the 49 or 54w options be enough? I can find the tubes fairly easily but not so the battens.

Stick with 54watt or 58w normal, if you need more you get a double fitting.

A 54w puts out 4500 lumens, roughly the same as 4 100w incandesent bulbs.

Sorry MacB... yes Gu10 [50w] can be replaced with 7w [may even be able to get 11w] LEDs which should give you excellent light. Try City Electrical Factors -they might have an outlet near you, usually on industrial estates.
shudders - Con Every Fecker. neweys or edmunsons . although if you want cheap then online is good . we got Ikea ones as the lamp itself looked good - 5w and we have 8 on 2 quad bars in the kitchen and have them directed where we need for specific light but the spread is fairly good.

Garage- T5 or T8 as User482 said . Not much in it as to which you should go for TBH.

Bad experience sub? I've got Phillips and Thorn stuff from CEF over the years and never had a problem... with trade discount so cheaper and decent returns service when I've had to swap things over.
Got 2 early LEDs from Ikes, think they were the 5w ones too... still going strong!
Don't like daylight bulbs myself but each to their own.
