The imperial system, as posted above, really struggles in thermodynamics because heat is measured in BTU and work (or mechanical energy) is measured in ft-lb (really ft-lbf, but it's rarely written as such). A conversion factor has to be used.

I have a Victorian book on steam engines, aimed at grammar school pupils. They were either much cleverer than we are, or it all went right over their heads too. Maths was just creeping into engineering by then; at least up to the time of John Ramsbottom (a genius of his time) almost everything was empirical.
