The imperial system, as posted above, really struggles in thermodynamics because heat is measured in BTU and work (or mechanical energy) is measured in ft-lb (really ft-lbf, but it's rarely written as such). A conversion factor has to be used.

I have a Victorian book on steam engines, aimed at grammar school pupils. They were either much cleverer than we are, or it all went right over their heads too. Maths was just creeping into engineering by then; at least up to the time of John Ramsbottom (a genius of his time) almost everything was empirical.

That's very generous of you. It's still a couple of years away so I'll not tempt fate 😉

You definitely can ride alongside the race course at Salisbury. It starts off as tarmac and turns into hard track after 0.36 miles.

I think that users of the various conventional and imperial units should not be allowed to pinch metric units when their own prove inadequate.

For instance, they can't have Watts. Imperial lightbulbs, cyclists and battery chargers should be rated in horsepower.

If horsepower is too large a unit then I propose the mouse power. Using the standard imperial method of choosing a random number there will be 17,323 mouse power to the horsepower.
