Knocked off by hit and run last night, on the way home from a good ride with pennine Paul. The car just kept coming left, trapped me between car and kerb, I came off. Just thought I'd hit my funny bone and rode the last 8 miles home one handed.

Couldn't sleep 'coz of the pain, so went to hospital this morning. Fractured elbow and have to see specialist on the 27th.

I might have to have operation, dr in a&e said it's a mess. No plaster cast tho, so no itchy stink.

The wife is very upset and has admitted she worries everytime I go out, this is my second major accident on a bike. I may give up riding to stop her and the kids worrying.

It'll be at least 8 to 10 weeks before I can even consider riding anyway.

2 drivers stopped to see if I was ok, that was nice.

Sorry to hear that, I hope you get a fix estimate less than 8-10 weeks on 27th.

Very frustrating to be forced off the bike, the resultant "off" time, resultant pressure to give up riding, due to something that occurred that wasn't even your fault!

I often hear wife/mother mentioning that they worry about me riding. I try to point out to them that the metal box on wheels outside is not really any safer TBH, impact speeds higher etc.

Best wishes.

Sorry to hear this mate .... i havn't ridden near any major roads or shopping areas for over a week. People drive like nutters around Christmas ..... failing to stop ... wtf????

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Ouch!

Hope it's less than 10 weeks.

I'd echo the nutters; I had 3 near-misses in 30 miles yesterday. 2 pulled out of junctions without seeing me and one left-hook.

What a poo get well soon

Similar thing happened to me earlier in the year resulting in a broken collar bone and far too long off the bike.

Don't make any hasty decisions about giving up just yet. Accidents are still few and far between (although certain members of this site seem to attract them more than others  )

Most accidents happen in poor visibility (at night), poor weather conditions or on busy crowded roads. There's plenty of scope for avoiding all of these conditions and still getting the enjoyment from riding a bike, all I'm saying is, there's is some middle ground and you don't have to completely give your hobby up.

I must admit to loosing a bit of confidence when I had my accident. I think because (in my humble opinion) I didn't do anything to cause the accident that left me with nothing I could do to improve things at my end and avoid it happening again. I became a fair-weather rider for a while when I did start up again and only rode on clear sunny days and on quiet roads.

I'm now much more of the opinion that (unfortunately) it's just one of those things and the benefits I get from cycling far out-weigh the risks.

Sorry, longer post than I'd intended when I started, get well soon

Bloody hell Shaun, sorry to hear that! I read P-P's account of your ride and had been wondering when I'd get to cycle with you both again.

Unfortunately, it's my turn to say "GWS mate".

I know your family have been worried about you since your MTB accident, but I hope that you do eventually get back on your bike. Obviously, people do get injured or killed when cycling but the vast majority of us live longer and healthier lives through it. Convincing your family of that might take some doing though ...

I'm hoping to organise a forum walk in early 2013, and it would be great to see you on that. :hello:
