"Week 01 — I’ve covered 1,666 miles (2,681 KM) and climbed 29,872 feet (9,105 meters). That’s an average of 238 miles (383 KM) a day. The goal is 240 (386 KM) miles a day, but I’m happy to be making progress. It’s been a tough (headwinds, rain, sore mouth, bonking, traffic) but beautiful (endless maple syrup bottles, great company, humidity for my breathing, a new part of the world for me and kind people) ride so far.
Tomorrow, June 15th, I’m flying out of Halifax, NS at 11:50am and will be landing in Lisbon, Portugal at 9:50pm. I’ll be stopping my track short of the airport. My planned route is currently over the required 18,000 miles and I need to shave a few off.
In 2017, Mark Beaumont’s first transfer was out of Beijing. He rode to the Great Wall of China and his crew took him to the airport. 9 years later, I’ll be meeting my mom in Halifax where she’ll then take Rue’s Subaru and drive it back to Anchorage, Alaska for the final leg of my route. It’s a new part of the country for her as well and she’s invited friends to road trip with her. I’m so excited to see her and I always wish I had more time.
A big thank you to my crew: Tim, Rob, Byron, Matt, Johnny and Rue. Tim is coming with Rue and me for the entire trip and I’ll see the rest of them when I touch back down in North America. I know I’ll be in good hands.
If you’d like to hear more about each of my days on the bike, Rue and I have record a podcast “Lael Rides Around the World.”?
