I struggle to understand why she didn't start a day earlier. There's a flight on Sunday, Monday but then Wednesday. Missing the Sunday flight would mean a 24 hour delay, missing the Monday 48 hours. Or better still, desigh the route so there's a short cut to the airport if time is tight and make up the miles somewhere later.

Still, 340 miles to the airport so 22 hours on the bike in the next 30 if she's to make check-in. Exciting stuff.

I struggle to understand why she started too! 🤣🤣🤣

Looking tough out there. Just 212 miles in last 24 hours, and daily average dropped to 237 miles. Virtual Mark Beaumont just 48 miles behind.

After losing time/miles on the stormy day she really needed to up the mileage but it's not happened. I do wonder if she's unwell.

She's now pretty much at the stage where she'd need to ride all the way to the airport with only ~3 hours sleep.

I think she's been at that stage, specifically for today's ride, for a couple of days now. It's certainly still achievable, with about twenty hours to the flight, 250 miles to go, and the tracker showing ETA in fifteen hours, but it's not overly promising really.

On the flight, however, whilst I concur with the above, that she should have started a day earlier from a flights perspective, there are other flight options; they're just indirect, so the elapsed time for flying is twelve hours rather than six. So, it's not necessarily a full, 48 hour loss if she does not make it to the Monday morning flight.

I've just read the Guinness rules, prompted by the fact that Jenny Graham stopped short of Beijing (to avoid travelling westward to Perth), and took a taxi to the airport. There is nothing to say that Lael cannot stop short of Halifax and take a bus or taxi. The rules state that 'Scheduled public and chartered transport may be used, but the challenger must be a passenger.' So, they could put her and the bike in a taxi a hundred miles, or whatever is necessary and safe, short of Halifax in order to make the plane, and then add some distance in during a later leg. That would seem an appealing plan.

"Week 01 — I’ve covered 1,666 miles (2,681 KM) and climbed 29,872 feet (9,105 meters). That’s an average of 238 miles (383 KM) a day. The goal is 240 (386 KM) miles a day, but I’m happy to be making progress. It’s been a tough (headwinds, rain, sore mouth, bonking, traffic) but beautiful (endless maple syrup bottles, great company, humidity for my breathing, a new part of the world for me and kind people) ride so far.

Tomorrow, June 15th, I’m flying out of Halifax, NS at 11:50am and will be landing in Lisbon, Portugal at 9:50pm. I’ll be stopping my track short of the airport. My planned route is currently over the required 18,000 miles and I need to shave a few off.

In 2017, Mark Beaumont’s first transfer was out of Beijing. He rode to the Great Wall of China and his crew took him to the airport. 9 years later, I’ll be meeting my mom in Halifax where she’ll then take Rue’s Subaru and drive it back to Anchorage, Alaska for the final leg of my route. It’s a new part of the country for her as well and she’s invited friends to road trip with her. I’m so excited to see her and I always wish I had more time.

A big thank you to my crew: Tim, Rob, Byron, Matt, Johnny and Rue. Tim is coming with Rue and me for the entire trip and I’ll see the rest of them when I touch back down in North America. I know I’ll be in good hands.

If you’d like to hear more about each of my days on the bike, Rue and I have record a podcast “Lael Rides Around the World.”?

It is 2.08am in Moncton, Canada and Lael has 230km to Halifax airport.

When she lands in europe, her next flight is from Istanbul to Kazakstan. She has plenty of space to add 230km to the ride if she takes a taxi to the airport this morning.

Her dot left Moncton hours ago and then stopped. I am hoping she decided to get a lift to the airport and will play catch up in europe. The other option is that she has scratched and we do not consider the third option.

She is now a long way behind marks dot
