...or brake and drop back behind him. I consider getting him out of my safety bubble as a win for me.
YesYou're not serious. Are you?

Nothing Hippo says is useful... fact of life, I'm afraid.thomas said:Anyway. Yes, different positioning on my part would effect what happened, so that kind of information is useful. Also, can this thread not turn into what someone else did with a coach - it's just not useful!
Tell that to the person who mentioned coaches!.thomas said:Okay. This isn't Thailand - the roads do work differently!
No shoot, Sherlock! Traffic is traffic the world over, of course there are local quirks and customs - get to know them!
Now. When things like this happen I can't go through every permutation of what I could or should do. I could of just slammed my brakes on to avoid him, then be nicely squished by the car behind who wasn't expecting it.
Why not? I do as do other cyclists. I am always on the alert, why aren't you?
I initially warned the driver to pull back. This didn't work so I did it again, a bit more vigerously. Just after the second attempt, when the mondeo had turned off I didn't speed up until I knew the moron was infront of me, so that I was not at risk.
It is all well and giving these elaborate ways to avoid a situation when you've got 20 minutes to think them up. Seriously. It was over in seconds.
Learn to read the road.

Don't take the criticism about dropping back too hard, btw. As you say, it's easy to think about what to do when you have all the time in the world to decide. Instead think of the discussion more as preparation to lay the groundwork for what you'll do in a future example. That way you (and I) have a much better chance to do the right thing without having to consider options.

thomas said:Like Hobbes said - wasn't directed at you at all. Sorry if you got that idea. I've no problem with dropping back being suggested as the first thing I should of done. Ultimately, I don't think it would have been practical. It would have been easier for me to have gotten back in front of the car, gone into a much stronger position to have stopped it.
Ultimately. I made the right decision. Why? I'm still here to post about it. : )
