You're not serious. Are you?

Bent Mikey, I am trying to understand your logic. You call me a muppet and then agree with me - who's the muppet now? Isn’t my ‘Would it have been too much of a hardship to ease off and let the car in?‘ the same as your ‘...or brake and drop back behind him.’?
Twice you have mentioned about me undertaking a stationary coach; I think you are referring to my video on Lat Phrao Road. The coach was at the lights at Chok Chai 4 and those lights have a countdown timer – I had enough time and space to get to the ASL safely before the lights changed.

I don't agree with you on the important part of your post, Hippo - you're blaming the cyclist for being incompetent when he wasn't, not even slightly. The dropping back, yes, that's one possible option I'd agree with.

And let's not be having excuses for your coach undertake, or the rest of the poor cycling you did in that video.

Okay. This isn't Thailand - the roads do work differently!

Now. When things like this happen I can't go through every permutation of what I could or should do. I could of just slammed my brakes on to avoid him, then be nicely squished by the car behind who wasn't expecting it.

I initially warned the driver to pull back. This didn't work so I did it again, a bit more vigerously. Just after the second attempt, when the mondeo had turned off I didn't speed up until I knew the moron was infront of me, so that I was not at risk.

It is all well and giving these elaborate ways to avoid a situation when you've got 20 minutes to think them up. Seriously. It was over in seconds.

Anyway. Yes, different positioning on my part would effect what happened, so that kind of information is useful. Also, can this thread not turn into what someone else did with a coach - it's just not useful!

Nothing Hippo says is useful... fact of life, I'm afraid.

Hey, don't give me a hard time, I was simply pointing out that Hippo has no right to talk about incompetent cycling given his past history. And defo not in your case, given that you were riding very competently.

Don't take the criticism about dropping back too hard, btw. As you say, it's easy to think about what to do when you have all the time in the world to decide. Instead think of the discussion more as preparation to lay the groundwork for what you'll do in a future example. That way you (and I) have a much better chance to do the right thing without having to consider options.

No shoot, Sherlock! Traffic is traffic the world over, of course there are local quirks and customs - get to know them!

Why not? I do as do other cyclists. I am always on the alert, why aren't you?

Learn to read the road.

Tell that to the person who mentioned coaches!.

Oh Mr_Hippo, you are an idiot.

Thomas did nothing wrong, he is entitled to ride on the road at his own speed and should not be forced into altering his speed/direction by other people's bad driving.

He *could* have simply braked and dropped back behind the moron in the car... but why should he have to? He's legally entitled to be where he was, the car driver was a pr*ck who shouldn't be on the road and who tried to bully a cyclist out of the way simply because he didn't like being overtaken.

Simples really.

Don't you get bored with all your trolling?

BM - I read what Thomas wrote as a dig at the Hippo rather than it being directed at you.

Strange as it may sound, I sort of enjoy Hippo's posts. He's predicatable, contrary, and antagonistic (the voice of the frustrated motorist on CC) but it's worth having his two-penneth as I suspect quite a few people would (partially) agree with him...

It seems to me that this phenomenon happens all over the world some, if not most, car drivers can't get it into their heads that the bike ahead is keeping pace with the traffic and should not be overtaken. I certainly get in Vietnam, The Philippines, China and other places where I ride bikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like Hobbes said - wasn't directed at you at all. Sorry if you got that idea. I've no problem with dropping back being suggested as the first thing I should of done. Ultimately, I don't think it would have been practical. It would have been easier for me to have gotten back in front of the car, gone into a much stronger position to have stopped it.

Ultimately. I made the right decision. Why? I'm still here to post about it. : )

Pride before a fall.

Glad you survived to tell the tale.

How come you didn't have your Airzound?

On the occasions that your situation remotely looks like happening to me, I stick my right arm out, preferably in a raised ready to strike position and wobble a bit. It works a treat. No problems since ;).

I reckon he was close enough for you to have leant on his wing mirror .

So how come you've lost your voice? You eating properly, getting all your greens and minerals to keep your immune system functioning properly. You must look after yourself ya know being a student. There isn't a lot in pasta except refined carbs if it's white pasta.
