lentils and pulses really cheap but always wonder whether the amount of time spent cooking them negates their bargainous price.... pre the allotment we have been known to do a quick ride past farmers field, grab a few sweetcorn or whatever for a bit of variety
Get a pressure cooker, they're dead quick, and you can cook a massive batch and freeze what you don't need.
makes sense if I weren't so scared of pressure cookers - the stuff of childhood nightmares - never think to freeze 'em just make me and Mr Treehuggery eat chick pea themed meals for a week, have a week off and then have a butter bean themed week #varietyisthespiceoflife

Protein? I think I've eaten a few hundred flies this week while out on the bike...so that is a plus for vegetarians..if you cycle
News just in: Flies aren't vegetables.

As long as you can cook, are imaginative, can plan meals and aren't seduced by marks n Spencer adverts you can eat very well for sod all shopping at the discount supermarkets and still leave a bit for the odd treat curry-out or similar.

I can't cook but was once very poor and I can confirm that rice and tins of chopped tomatoes can keep you alive for pennies.

In my travelling days, it was widely known that the cheapest forms of sustenance available to man were bananas and milk. Not very helpful, perhaps, but it's always stayed with me.
