I had one like this on a bike - it was quite bouncy. I had to replace it, but I can't remember why now. I see quite a few vintage leather ones for sale at flea markets.

I did a quick search and they seem to have a rather excessive use of springs.

But in answer to your question, no I've never used one.

What....what are those lower springs doing? Are they decorative?

They are the main springs, the rod through the centre acts on the bottom of the spring extending the spring rather than compressing it.

Ah, thanks for that. I thought the world had gone mad for a minute. In the original picture it looks like the saddle rails are attatched to that back plate. This one shows it (the Lepper) better.

That picture also shows that when the softer/less resilient tightly wound springs hit their design limit of travel there are stops between the 2 rear bars that bring the 2nd set of stiffer widely wound springs into use.
