My neighbour, a good lad, is a VERY keen fisherman. In order to be able to cart his various items of 'must have' fishing kit about, he needs a Transit van - !
I occasionally remind him that 'when I were lad', all we needed was the rod along the bike top tube and a basket slung across our back.
His usual response is 'Shaddup - !'

When I were a lad , it was smelly rucksack on my back with bait and my food for the day . Rod was gaffer taped to the top tube of my bike ! If I went for a whole day !

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Mr WD was an avid angler. I used to go as well, and caught roach, rudd, bream and Carp on lakes In the Midlands.

We have our own pond here and now he just has a dabble now and again.

He is no longer interested in spending lots of money on rods and gear and day tickets. Anymore, especially when he can walk 100 yards up the field. 😆

I think fishing itself is almost like a disease... You walk into a tackle shop for for a £2-4 pack of hooks and cheap groundbait/pellets and end up leaving after spending £500 on new reels, rods or fancy kit like those remote control boats that carry loose feed to where your bait is and drop it at a push of a button.

With my old man it was very different. He does a lot of carp fishing so all the equipment he bought and used he pretty much used 15-25 years till they gave up the ghost and he had no choice but to fork out for new gear. We are talking about really early carbon fiber or fiber glass fishing rods. Its amazing how much lighter new rods are compared to those old ones.

For carpers, it doesn't matter a whole lot how much their equipment weighs as they dont move around to different swims very much once they are all set up.

Modern day match anglers are as bad for carrying loads of kit .They all need barrows to transport to their pegs . When I used to fish matches seriously me and my mate got all our kit in the back of my Ford escort estate and everything was carried for miles along rivers and canals ,all the lads I now who still fish at a high level travel alone as you can't get 2 people's kit in 1 car anymore and most match anglers drive vans .
My fishing nowadays involves a deckchair 1 waggler rod and a landing net while fishing a lake in Cornwall catch bream and skimmers while watching the campers ( Carp fisherman ) catching nothing all day .The last time I went I landed a 9lb carp on light weight kit 2lb hook length and the carp anglers watch me land it and weighed it and said that's the biggest fish to come out all week ! Not sure they were amused

caught on a 21g berkley pulse spintail - another rather tiny lure. I dont know what it is about this location that they wont take larger lures. This one could easily take down a 10-15cm lure (maybe even 18-20cm at a stretch) but they all love these tiny spinner baits.
