Nip out to Skellingthorpe, aka "Smelly Skelly" thanks to the rendering plant on the edge of the village. To work the Ron Burgundy quote, "It stings the nostrils, but in a good way"

I have actually been there, dropping off a rental car, from memory makes UK Lincoln look like Las Vegas.

Another pitch for Gdansk failed this morning so a Lincoln hotel is booked for 26th/27th Feb. My mother will be fine with any walking she is a fit as a fiddle, she is an ex-headmistress and has many interests, however her favourite is having a good time and she already has a list of bars/pubs she wants to visit. I am amazed she has got to this age

Where are you staying?

I just remembered -been by it so many times and always wanted to go in, but never did:

they had a sign you could see from the road -and for some reason the name has always stuck with me! From the website it looks like they've expanded into weddings and events. I can't remember anything from Gdansk though.

I had a Polish teacher at a school close by, she was a lovely woman, sadly most likely to have passed away by now as she was in her 60's in the 1980's.

You could visit this coal fired chippy not a mega distance north of Lincoln.

Not a patch on the other* Lincs coal-fired chippy, Greyfriars in Stickney.
PS Paul Verlaine taught for a few months in Stickney in 1875 before becoming screamingly bored and departing for the fleshpots of Boston.

* there may be more than two, but I've tried both of these.

Are Greyfriars still there?

They were the last time I went to the enormous Stickney car boot, which would have been sometime last October.
This page of Restaurant Guru has glowing reviews from a month ago, so unless the place has burnt down since then, I'd guess so.
Haven't you been there? Well worth the trip from yours, and could pick up some mouth-watering smoked eel from Smith's at Friskney while you're in the area.

It's worth a day trip, maximum, IMO. I tried to dissuade her because I knew it would be disappointing for her, she often potters about with her friends in Harrogate, York & Leeds and Lincoln is like a dead zone in comparison. The Cathedral was great, we really enjoyed it and spent a couple of hours there, the castle was ok, The steep street was ok but not a patch on Howarth's local steep street, retail was poor and too spread out for the foot fall. Louth was busier.

Nightlife, what nightlife? Lincoln shuts at 5.30, I was shocked, I could see a university slap bang in the middle of it but no students appeared to be out and about, maybe it was the cold? It's the only place I've been where I've made an effort to find a Weatherspoons so that we could be around other humans.

The most exciting thing was trying leave in the white out this morning.

Not coming back for a long weekend then^_^

York, and particularly Harrogate, are hard to beat outside London for what we could call middle class pottering.

Mummy, having been 'spoiled' by her regular trips, was always likely to be a bit disappointed with somewhere else.

Nope, when you are prepared to drive to Louth looking for excitement, you know you've been had. I took the train to Halifax last Saturday to see the re-furbed Piece hall Yard, Lincoln makes Halifax look like Las Vegas.

I could say I told you so^_^

I think Liverpool beats both of those.
