Yes, the area around the Cathedral yesterday was postcard perfect, I'd have loved a roof top tour but it was too early in the year for one.

My favourite shop was half way down the Steep Hill that sold all sorts of vintage airplane and standard electrical components....................I could have spent all day in there. If you want a coffee then Lincoln is your place, tons of outlets, but want a decent bar? Couldn't find one, at least not one with more than 4 people in it, just chain pubs, student hanger bars, all empty. I saw a decent pub, Jolly Brewer but didn't want to drink alone...........again.........if I lived there I'd open a micro pub, get 6-8 people in and you'd have the most happening place in the City.

If you were looking for a beer you should have tried The Strugglers.

You missed Widow Cullen's Well which, if you are Ok with Sam Smith's, would fit that bill. That aside, The Strait and Narrow has a huge beer menu and knowledgeable bar staff.

Maybe the weather got to me.........I don't like cold and didn't even enjoy being in Bruges last month. Tonight, family was having a few drinks at my mothers, somebody asked if she enjoyed Lincoln, yikes! But she said "I did enjoy it and I would think it is a lovely place in summer". It probably is.

I took the train to Halifax last Saturday to see the re-furbed Piece hall Yard, Lincoln makes Halifax look like Las Vegas.
What's it like now? It was always impressive in the raw state I saw it in years ago, particularly if you pulled back and remembered when it was built. I believe colne had a smaller similar thing but it was knocked down in favour of some shoddy 60s thing.

York, and particularly Harrogate, are hard to beat outside London for what we could call middle class pottering.

Mummy, having been 'spoiled' by her regular trips, was always likely to be a bit disappointed with somewhere else.
Last time I was in york i must admit I found it very irritating, at least in the centre, way too touristy. I have the impression that it's on the list for foreign tourists venturing outside london - oxford, stratford, york. May check out harrogate next time i am up north. Only ever seen it through a bus window, on a school day trip to york aged 10. Have the idea that it has one of spoons' more interesting buildings, am always interested in checking those out.

Harrogate is nowt special. Just another medium sized northern town with pretentions of being a bit posh (it's not)
Alan Bennett called it Bradford with O'levels.
All the shops are closing down and all the eateries are chains.
I live in Knaresborough. Pretty but tiny town 4 miles down the road. If I need to visit somewhere bigger, I bypass Harrogate and go to Leeds or York.

Just gone back up thread mark and remembered the yellow fiat 500. Would love to see a pic of the pair of you with that as long as it's the first relaunched version, not the second. Am assuming it's not the original.

By tbe by, I once played hard to get in Lincoln, by whitby i'd weakened/"oh go on then".

Ah well, at least has the wondrous Spa Cycles, who I've bought stuff from but never visited.

It's the mustard yellow one, not the banana one & a late 1st generation 2014, they have ruined it with the update IMO.

Very impressive, I am sure it'll be buzzing on a nice day. It was pretty bust with gawpers last Saturday, I like the uniform shop window/door colour and restrained signage but on the other hand, you don't know what the shops are until you are in them! Work still going in in many units. Halifax centre itself was surprisingly well let and had good footfall.

Thanks for that mark. It could pass for Italy if wasn't for the church. A return trip to Halifax is on the cards for me I think. Totally agree about the latest cinquecento - it's been pumped up on steroids, totally lost the character of the original and first relaunch.

You mean the old indoor market? Not the Piece Hall?

Thread drift alert - anything else interesting to see in Halifax?

Yes, the old market rather than the Piece Hall for the Russian place. I don't know much about Halifax to be honest regarding the other things to see - was bit of a flying visit. There's probably some suggestions on the local tourist office site or Trip advisor

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Piece Hall looks nice but is still a bit empty of decent shops to date. Hopefully it'll pick up.

And back to Lincoln - thanks for this @MarkF as it's looking like my eldest will be studying there from September. It's the only one of 4 universities we've all liked and he has an Unconditional offer. A weekend trip is planned, although we'll also be down for the Lincoln Grand Prix in May, so this'll be helpful.

However given that he has a learning difference we'll also be making sure he knows where the shops, etc. are. Someone / somewhere with a cat would also help and I think there's a cat cafe opening soon that could solve this issue. He'd prefer to bring his, but finding accommodation that would allow him's a bit difficult.
