Can someone recommended which flavour to go for as it's been a while since I've dabbled in linux. It's for the OH's netbook and she's never used linux so a interface similar to windows would be good.

Bit worried that ubuntu might be a bit much for it. It's only got 1gb of ram and I don't have time to lobotomise it before we go on holiday. Apparently the windows install corrupted 6 months ago but she leaves it until 2 days before we go on holiday to inform me of this.

I have Puppy Linux on a very old laptop. It works VERY well on limited resources BUT installation can be 'a bit difficult'. Download and burn the iso; attach to wired network (wireless also possible); boot from the iso, then, when the desktop is running use the browser to locate the 'one-click installer' in the Puppy forums, download that, click the file, it will unpack, click the 'one click installer' shell script, the jobs a good-un. (I used the one click installer from the FIRST post in this thread: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42876)

I also use Linux Mint XFCE 32 bit on another laptop. Dump the desktop image, change the icon set to 'high contrast' and you're done. It's fantastic, use it if you can.

I use 'elementary' on a Samsung NC-10, installed easy with the ISO burned to a 2gb USB stick. One thing I do though is not to try to treat it as a small laptop and make allowances for it's relative lack of puff (sounds like me cycling actually)... So on top of what apps come as standard I've only loaded up the Libre word processor and use web apps for the rest, Gmail etc. Works fine.
