The state owned Lloyds bank has decided that a flat charge of five pounds wil be levied on using an authorised and unauthorised overdraft each month it is used, irrespective of the amount overdrawn.

Overdraft interest is also applied.

P&L?

Lloyds peed me off in 1980 for some silly charge. I closed the account and they have not had my business for the past 30 years.

I really think if you are unhappy with them you should not do business with them.

Santander are doing some deals where they give you dosh to move accross to them I think. There are better deals out there than Lloyds offer so you will not be doing yourself any good getting annoyed with them and still paying them for doing what they are there to do.

I have found Santander to be fine. No way would I bank with Lloyds or Barclays.

I like HSBC. They don't charge you anything if you go up to £10 overdrawn, or if it's the first time in six months you've gone over. I've got a student account but I think the same rules apply to normal accounts too.

I recently had my overdraft withdrawn and had to pay it off all in one go.
The bank was being really 'difficult' about discussing it with me until I placed a wad of cash on the desk and asked if they wanted it or not.
Then they got very charming and were a little concerned that I might want to close my account. I considerd it but thought I'd leave it open as I had bills to pay.
I then had a huge lump of money removed from my account for 'unauthorised overdraft fees even though I had paid it off.
I argued it and got some back but they said the charge still applies up to two months after the overdraft was cleared, however, had I closed my account immediately when I cleared the overdraft the charges wouldn't have been levied! Now had I known that....

I closed my all accounts immediately, current, savings, student and business, and took a wad of cash and all my business away with me. Their loss overall as they made a lot of money out of providing me with banking services. Still, its only a drop in the ocean that the bank wouldn't even consider as an issue. Bet they would if everyone did it though.

MY mortgage was paid off with Santander 3 years ago, and they still take 64 pence a month out of my account for ineterest payments. I have been threatened with repossession three times because I have "not paid" my 64 pence (each time it has been paid out on time)

.. and now they are refusing to recognise the Ombudsman or correspond with either them or myself over my complaints.

Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole!

When most mortgages are set up the borrower opts to not pay the bank's set-up fees and to stick the fees in with the loan. for various reasons they cannot actually do this and so set up two accunts - one for the big sum you borrowed for the house and the second for the fees. It sounds like when you paid off the mortgage they forgot to include the second account in with the redemption figure so somwhere in Santander you have an account in debt by around £200 that is generating interest.

If they removed their mortgage (legal charge) from the house then they have less options than if the charge is still in place.

When I paid off my mortgage I received the deeds to the house. Did they not send these to you? If so I don't see how your house could be repossessed?

My own deeds are now lodged with my solicitor which is a free service they offer.

Thinking further about Cunobelin's little problem, could it be that the lender has held on to the deeds in 'safe keeping' by the expedient of a nominal loan for which they charge the 64p? The Nationwide used to offer this option and may still do.

After all, who wants to risk keeping such important docs in a shoebox under the bed?
