Looking for travel advice -London Heathrow to Russell Square with a family

If it only applies to devices and cards (and I assume by that you mean contactless credit cards), and not oyster cards, I might be out of luck though -unless I consider buying a cheap phone which can be a payment device.

Daily capping works with oyster, weekly doesn't - but you won't need that.

For the adults, just get two oyster cards at Heathrow, put £20 on each and just use them. It's easy to top up if you need to, but you'll probably max out at £6.60 most days.

You can get a refund on the deposit and any remaining credit from any manned tube station when you are leaving.

For the kids, you can order the photo cards online and pick them up from visitors office at Heathrow if you are arriving while it is open. At least that's my understanding from skimming web page.

You can also get one day travelcards from a ticket office or even a newsagent if Oyster is too much of a faff, but you do need to know which zones you want.

In my zillion visits to London I don't think I've ever been outside Z1&2. Z9 that @srw refers to is probably further from London that where I live

If the weather is good Russell Sq is walkable to lots. Tube needed for east (tower bridge, St. Paul's etc), west (museums, Buckingham palace etc). Lots of central (west end, soho, Covent Garden, Trafalgar sq, picadilly, south bank even) it it'll be easier and quicker to walk.

Whilst in London, is easy to take an 'MBNA Clipper' ride on The River Thames. Touch in- touch out etc as it is part of Transport for London - and is an ideal way to get an overview of London. A trip from Embankment Pier (just past Gordons Wine Bar / a short walk from Trafalgar Square / The Harp pub...other tourist sites are available ) to Greenwich is a super way to travel. And, the winding ways of the River are a delight - as shown by the vista of constructions sweeping from left to right etc. A walk around Greenwich Market is also ok and a short walk up the hill to the Meridian etc...
Also agree about Piccadilly Line from LHR - plenty of backyards to see. Sitting in a cab would be absolutely dire.
