His cunning plan is flawed as an angle grinder is a lot cheaper to hire/buy than a new bike

we've got a few bits that should do the job, grinders (what size do you want) too many drills to count, SDS drills, crow bars, bolt croppers, tractor etc and i know a few firemen with access to those big hydraulic can opener shear things for car rooves. with that lot we should get his bike out

Thanks for all the comments - our neighbour works at a garage, maybe he can assist with bolt croppers. Angle grinder held aloft, in mid-air over bikes sounds more like something out of the A-Team, rather than the Whacky Races scenario we are currently faced with

If I was in his situation I'd call my father in law. He'd turn up 15 minutes later with an angle grinder and a huge grin because he rarely gets to use it.

I fear this situation so I have a key safe with all the spare keys in. That's no help to you but I feel better.

That is all well and good but what if you lose the key to the keysafe.

Keysafe gets cut opened! And later, replaced.

Angle grinder from Argos. Cut the lock open, then return it saying it wasn't up to doing the work required.
Only money spent then will be on travelling there and back.

The key safe isn't locked. Not the best security but it's more about keeping spare keys where I can find them rather than stopping burglars getting them. Besides it's fairly well hidden.

Hacksaw and cut the frame. Save the lock for when you've made the first cut and the keys appear on the kitchen table.

Use a metal cutting disc, not a metal grinding disc with an angle grinder. Cutting discs are about 2-3mm thick, grinding ones are a lot thicker.

Ask him where he last left it. That's what my wife always asks.
It seems to help because most of our keys eventually turn up again.

Yes I'm sure that they will turn up again, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but sometime (hopefully before N+1, a tragic angle-grinding accident or incidental lopping-off of fingers with bolt croppers occurs!)

My OH always puts her keys on the first almost flat surface she comes to. They usually end up on the floor underneath.
