My father is 80 and at his tallest, he was a smidge over 6’4!! A giant for his generation!
My grandfather was around 6’2 born in 1915 or thereabouts!
My mother however was only around 5’1.5 at her tallest…hence I never quite made it to 5’10 or my brother to 6’!
I had quite a few very tall ancestors (and have a few tall family members now) in @oldwheels' part of Scotland. That's probably where I got my height from (and my delicate skin, which burns at a sniff of the sun). The English side are only average height.

There was a 6' tall woman ahead of me in the queue at Aldi the other night.

I am not advocating that you do this , but I bet if you had gently touched the back of her knee she would have shrunk a couple of inches briefly before punching you

It seems to vary by region. I have noticed that women from Newcastle and environs tend to be well above average height. I have met a few who were much taller than I was at 5ft 11ins. Perhaps in the gene pool for that area.

It is true that people are getting bigger, and I don't mean just fatter!

I was saying to someone the other day that "I used to be tall" (6' 1"at 15 or 16 years of age) . I was the tallest person in the school. These days there could easily be 3 or 4 boys taller than that per class, and probably quite a few who are 6' 4"+ in the school!

I was on one forum ride and there were 3 men at least 4" taller than me out of about 20 riders.

My ex-partner was unusually tall for a woman - around 5' 10" - but I see many more young women of that kind of height now. There was a 6' tall woman ahead of me in the queue at Aldi the other night.

Did you measure her?!

Yes, that is it, probably.... all of those marauding vikings, then, later, all of those sea-farers coming to Newcastle for their coal (among other things), and, then, in the more recent past, the effects of Newcastle Brown Ale, and the party scene ;)

The Dutch were prominent in Shetland and many settled there and no evidence of height there. The specialist nurse who came to my wife regularly was very tall and came from the island of Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides. Most likely Scandinavian origins.

But did she have a spare pair of boots, or did the conversation not get around to that?

It was a 'guesstimate', but given that I am 6' 1" and I was looking up slightly to the top of her head, it is obvious that she was close to my height.

I didn't know you played rugby!
I wasn't thinking of that, but yes, I did at school. I'm sure I posted my rugby story on here years ago. Let me see if I can find it.

Here you go...

I was having fun playing rugby as a teenager until some cowardly toerag in the other team reached under and punched me in the face in a scrum. The red mist descended upon me when they laughed at my bleeding nose and I subsequently flattened half their team as they attempted to stop me on the way to scoring my one and only try. It seemed that the only way I could play well was to play very hard and I didn't enjoy that gladiatorial feeling so I gave it up!

She had lots of very fashionable pairs of boots but when she was visiting I took the opportunity to get out on my bike for an hour confident in the knowledge that she would not leave until I returned. Any conversation mostly took place therefore in my absence and my conversations were mostly regarding her professional opinions.

Yes, except for the garage - there be spiders!

I've scoured it twice without success. ☹️

Final check of everywhere completed - the boots have been declared lost in mysterious circumstances.

New ones to be ordered in January as they might be in a sale then.

Thank you for the inspirational answers!
dont give up,one final place to look, are you wearing them.
