Not so impossible. Enshrined in the folklore of my company is the story of our chief technical bod who went to Manchester airport to pick up some important visitors. All he had to do was drive them round the ring road to Radcliffe, which is just north of the city. He was very nervous so he talked and talked and carried on driving.... until one of the visitors asked: "Er... your factory is in Manchester isn't it? So why are we almost in Leeds?"

Turns out he had missed J17 for Bury and Radcliffe and carried on clockwise right round the M62 and over the Pennines.

Poor bloke, that's more than just a bit lost. How nice of the police to pay his fare to get him home. ^_^

I've done it myself, but not to that extent. I'd planned an all-day ride and by teatime I realised I'd make a mistake and ended up about 25 miles away from where I'd been aiming for. I was already knackered, which made it probably the slowest and most punishing 25 miles I've ridden in a long time. I ended up many hours overdue and exhausted.

This should obviously be in the "Your Ride Today..." thread.

It was my first century ride, and I spent a lot of time planning nutrition and pacing, after 30 days riding at 16.6 km per day I had an 'oops' moment. Turns out I should've spent more time planning my route.

A pal of mine cycled from Blackburn to Cornwall in about four days for a wedding; he just input the day's destination YHA or B&B postcode on Google Maps on his phone, asked for a cycling route, turned off the screen and stuck an earphone in his ear then followed the instructions. He says it took him along some delightful routes.

I met a German woman cycling from S E France back home to Hamburg. She had no sense of direction and could not read a map, so she rode with the sea on her left until she came to a big river in Germany, then headed upstream until she saw lots of buildings.

So going by that she cycled around France, Belgium and Holland before finding the river? Hopefully she didn't get to France from Hamburg by the 'sea on the left' trick!

Do you think folk were deliberately sending him the wrong way
There's more than a billion people in China, and I wonder how many place names. There must be some duplicate or ambiguous ones. Imagine asking directions for Kingston from, say, Peterborough. You could quite easily set off the wrong way. And once you were heading the wrong way - getting closer to the wrong Kingston, people would continue to advise you to keep going towards the Kingston that is nearer.

Or you might end up in Jamaica
